BEVERLY, Mass. – Suffolk baseball had six players garner eight all-conference distinctions Monday morning as the Commonwealth Coast Conference unveiled its 2024 All-CCC Team. Harry Painter and Garret Roberts received a pair of nods apiece, Brett Bucklin headlined the group on the first team, while Jonny Gilbride, Alex Sorenti-Burns and Colin Flynn all scooped up all-league distinctions as well.
The eight honors are the most for Suffolk since it garnered eight in 2022, the most in the Rams' CCC tenure.
The group was the main ingredient to Suffolk's most successful season in the CCC. The Rams assembled a 9-5 league ledger, its best conference campaign in the CCC and best league mark since 2019 when it went 14-2 in the final year in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC). Behinds its best CCC record, Suffolk secured the third seed in the CCC Tournament, its best seeding in program history, the blue-and-gold captured two wins in the CCC playoffs for the first time.
Painter, a junior from Essex, Massachusetts, earned a spot on the second team as a first baseman and collected a third-team accolade as a starting pitcher.
At the plate, he knocked a team-high 62 hits, which lands on Suffolk's single-season list in 10th. Of his 62 knocks, 28 of which were good for extra bases including 18 doubles and five triples and homers, respectively. The 18 doubles sit second on the Rams' single season list. He brought in 43 runs and scored 47 himself behind a .350/.415/.593 slash line. The two-way player became the first known Ram in program history to have multiple 100-plus total base seasons, accomplishing the feat for the second time in his Suffolk career this year after hitting the mark in 2022.
On the mound, the right-handed hurler saved the best for last. In seven appearances, all starts, he went 5-1 with one complete game, the 3-1 CCC Tournament elimination win over sixth seed Wentworth. In 44.2 innings of action, he built a 3.02 ERA with 61 strikeouts.
With two honors this year, Painter became the most decorated Ram from the CCC with four all-league distinctions and a CCC Player of the Year nod in 2022.
Roberts also picked up a pair of All-CCC selections this season, both on the second-team, as a starting pitcher and designated hitter. The right-handed ace saw the most innings on the mound for the blue-and-gold's staff with 60.1 under his belt over 13 appearances, a dozen starts. He went 4-3 with one complete game and one save to his credit. The senior struck out 47 hitters and held a 5.22 ERA. At the dish, he was one of the most consistent bats in the Rams' order with 52 hits, 34 RBI and 44 runs on a .371 average.
Bucklin, who brought his talents to Ram Nation as a grad transfer from Worcester State, made his mark on the Rams program from the get-go and is the first-ever Suffolk pitcher to grab a first-team All-CCC accolade. The right-hander from Lynn, Massachusetts compiled a 3.14 ERA over 57.1 innings in 16 games played, five starts. He went 2-3 on the bump and saved two games with 39 strikeouts to his credit.
Gilbride garnered his first All-CCC distinction with a second-team nod. The shortstop was an offensive force with 59 hits, 50 RBI and 41 runs scored. He became the second player in Suffolk's history to have 50-plus runs and RBI in the same season since Joe Duca in 2000. The Beverly, Massachusetts native is the eighth Ram in program history to send double digit hits out of the park.
Sorenti-Burns filled in any role that was necessary for Suffolk's line-up this season. The utility player that calls Sagamore Beach home, supplied 46 hits including 13 doubles, one triple and eight jacks. He drove in 44 runs and scored 39 himself. The grad transfer from Worcester State walked 25 times and wore a pitch 26 for a .483 on-base percentage.
Flynn rounded out the Rams all-league honorees. The freshman was nearly perfect in the outfield with just one error in 106 total chances for a team-best .991 fielding percentage of everyday starters. The Dorchester, Massachusetts product added 39 hits, 39 runs, 21 RBI and was swift on the base paths with a team-high 19 stolen bases. Flynn is the second-ever freshman to receive an all-league distinction from the CCC first since Painter in 2021.
Since joining the CCC in 2021, Suffolk has collected 26 all-league honors including one Player of the Year, four first-team, 12 second-team, eight third-team and one Team Sportsmanship.
