Roger Williams Hands Baseball First CCC Tourney Loss, 3-1

BRISTOL, R.I. – Suffolk baseball's offense was limited to one run, while second seed Roger Williams took the lead in the second inning and never let it go to hand the third-seeded Rams a 3-1 setback in the CCC Tournament Thursday morning at Paolino Field.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 1 | Roger Williams 3
RECORDS: Suffolk (26-15) | Roger Williams (24-11-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Back-to-back two-out walks by Alex Sorenti-Burns and Max Iorio put a pair of runners on for Sam Armbruster. The sophomore placed a base hit in center to plate the first run of the day and give the blue-and-gold an early 1-0 edge in the top of the first.

Roger Williams rallied around a two-out, two-run double off Nick Sheehan's bat that put the Rams in a 2-1 hole in the bottom of the second.

The Hawks extended their advantage in the home half of the fifth. London Camelo singled, stole second and moved to third on a balk. Joe Norris made a highlighted reel play to stop the ball at second when Owen Hibbard put the ball in play, but the RWU batter beat the throw at first by inches. In the process Camelo scored and pushed the margin to 3-1.

Garret Roberts found himself in a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth. The senior right-handed pitcher showed composure as he threw two quick strikes before Camelo flew out to Colin Flynn in center to keep the distance at two through six innings.

Suffolk had the tying runs on the bags in the top of the seventh with runners in the corners and one out. Xxx caught Armbruster's foul tip for the third out and Max Martin grounded out to Nick Gleason, unassisted, to keep the two-run gap.

The Rams were once again in a sticky situation defensively in the bottom of the eighth as RWU chucked the bags. An infield fly put the second out on the board before Sorenti-Burns made a diving catch in love to hold things still at 3-1.

Suffolk went down in order in the top of the ninth to land in the loser's bracket.
