Baseball Tops Wentworth in Game 2, 7-3

BOSTON – An early advantage helped Suffolk baseball take down Wentworth, 7-3, in the nightcap of a Commonwealth Coast Conference twinbill Saturday afternoon at East Boston Memorial Park.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 7 | Wentworth 3
RECORDS: Suffolk (17-13, 6-5 CCC) | Wentworth (20-11, 3-6 CCC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a case of déjà vu as Suffolk started the game up 3-0 after a three-run first inning. Extra base hits factored in early as Garret Roberts tripled and Jonny Gilbride barreled a double. Harry Painter singled to score Gilbride. Painter made his way around on a hit by pitch and back-to-back fielder choices at second.

Wentworth cut the deficit down to two, 3-1, when Christian Peruzzi recorded a bases loaded sac fly. The bags got chucked after Nick Cullinan and Devon Lapierre singled and Christian Roncal walked.

Suffolk got that run back during a passing ran shower in the home half off the inning. Painter slugged a ground-rule double down the left field line and put on his running shoes on Alex Sorenti-Burns' single to left field.

A two-run top of the fourth by the Leopards made things interesting as Suffolk's lead was sliced to one, 4-3.

Both sides went scoreless of the next two frames then insurance came for Suffolk in the eighth. Singles came off Sam Armbruster's and Adam Braid's bat. Pinch hitter Jack Mihalchik put the bunt down to push the runners 90 feet and Colin Flynn sauntered to the plate with Rams on second and third. The freshman barreled a bases clear double to right center to pad the margin to three. Flynn would go on to score himself thanks to Roberts' single to right center to stretch the gap to four, 7-3.
The Leopards managed to muster two base hits in the top of the ninth, but Brett Bucklin kept them there to preserve the nightcap victory and CCC sweep for Suffolk.
