Baseball Stopped by Roger Williams in Nightcap, 13-5

EAST BOSTON – A sixth-inning offensive outburst by the Hawks helped Roger Williams hand Suffolk baseball a 13-5 game two Commonwealth Coast Conference setback Saturday at East Boston Memorial Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk sprung onto the board in the first frame. Jonny Gilbride singled up the middle and advanced to second on an error by RWU's pitcher when Harry Painter put the ball into play. One out and a walk later, Max Martin singled to short to make it a 1-0 Rams game early on.   

A walk and two base hits helped the Hawks tie the game in the top of the fourth. Dennis Folan worked a two-out walk, advanced to second on Nick Sheehan's single to left and tied the tying-run behind Ty Cali's single up the middle. 

The Rams responded in the bottom of the fifth to regain the upperhand. Colin Flynn singled to left field and swiped second. The freshman put on his running shoes on Garret Roberts base hit through the ride side to send Suffolk in front. A productive ground out by Gilbride and a wild pitch allowed Roberts to take third. The designated hitter tagged up on Painter's long out to center to give Suffolk a 3-1 lead.   

Roger Williams put up a lopsided eight runs in the sixth to put Suffolk in an 9-3 hole. The Hawks scoring came on eight hits and three Rams errors.    

Suffolk managed to get one run back in the bottom of the seventh. Roberts singled to left and moved over to third on Giilbride's ground-rule double center. Painter's ground out to second plated Roberts to put the host back within five, 9-4. 

The Hawks tacked on two more runs in the eighth to extend their edge to seven, 11-4.  

Pinch hitter Cole Hilliard brought one Rams run in in the bottom of the inning with a base hit to right. He plated Max Martin, who doubled down the right field line and took third on Sam Armbruster's fly out to center. 

RWU added two more runs in the ninth and Suffolk went down in order in the home half of the inning for the 13-5 final. 

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Pierce Salbego took the loss after giving up six runs, five earned, on 10 hits and two walks with six strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. 
  • Gregory Kaufmann twirled 2.0 innings of relief. He let up two runs, both unearned, on two hits and three walks with a pair of punchouts. 
  • John McDevitt (3 R, 0 EER, 1 H, 0.2 IP) and Cam Martin (2 R, 1 H, 3 BB, 1.0 IP) came out of the blue-and-gold's pen as well. 
  • Lucas Lariviere earned the victory behind a three-run, one-earned, six-hit, two-walk, three-strikeout effort in 5.2 innings. 
  • Brett Lauterbach (1 R, 2 H, 1 K) and Markanthony Glickman (1 H, 3 K) each shoved 1.0 inning of relief. 
  • James Nichols (1 R, 2 H, 1 K) and Ryan Camp (1 K) both came in for 0.2 innings of work.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Roberts went 3-for-5 with one RBI, two runs scored and one stolen base. 
  • Gilbride supplied two hits including one double and scored one run. 
  • Painter produced a pair of RBI. 
  • Max Martin added a 2-for-4 effort that featured one double with one RBI and one run scored. 
  • Flynn tallied a 2-for-4 showing with one run scored and one stolen base. 
  • Hillard logged one hit and one RBI. 
  • Armbruster recorded one hit, a double.

The Rams are off until Thursday, April 4 when they head to Wheaton for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference contest.
