Baseball Tripped Up in Seven in Game 1 at Wentworth, 14-4

WEYMOUTH, Mass. – An explosive fifth frame by Wentworth forced Suffolk baseball in a hole it could not climb out of as the Rams fell to the Leopards, 14-4, in seven innings in game one of Commonwealth Coast Conference double feature Saturday morning at Libbey Field.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 4 | Wentworth 14
RECORDS: Suffolk (9-16, 3-6 CCC) | Wentworth (3-23, 2-10 CCC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
WIT grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Suffolk chipped the deficit down to one in the top of the second as Garret Roberts tripled to right field to score Marc Birbiglia, who led off with a walk.

Two innings later, the Rams grabbed the lead, 3-2. Birbiglia and Roberts factored into the scoring once again. With a first and third situation, Roberts stole second and Birbiglia capitalized on an erratic throw down by WIT's catcher to even things up at 2-all. Roberts then came in on Luke Harder's single to center and push the blue-and-gold in front, 3-2.

The host matched Suffolk's offensive output in the home half of the inning to flip the script in its favor, 4-3.

In the top of the fifth the Rams evened things up for once again. Harry Painter doubled to left center, moved to third thanks to Birbiglia's infield single and scored when Joe Ward put the ball in play.

Wentworth figured out George Breslin in the fifth as it scored five runs on five hits to take a 9-4 lead over Suffolk.

The Rams bats stayed quiet the rest of the way, while the Leopards added two more runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to turn on the run-rule.
