Suffolk Represented at Old Time Baseball Game

Suffolk Represented at Old Time Baseball Game

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Suffolk baseball saw current Rams George Breslin and Garrett Roberts and former Mutt Adam Pellerin, current NESN anchor, represent the University in the 2022 Oldtime Baseball Game in late August.

The Oldtime Baseball game is a celebration of our national pastime, played each year at St. Pete's Field in North Cambridge. Since 1994, the annual Oldtime Baseball Game has fundraised for charity, while celebrating the traditions and has remained loyal to its mission of offering a glimpse of what it was like in the old days, when hundrds of fans would turn out to root for their "town" team in various local semipro leagues.

This year's event continued that legacy, while honoring the life of former Red Sox reliever Jim Corsi and raised funds to support Dana-Farber Cance Institute's Young-Onset Colorectal Cancer Center in memory of former Red Sox pitcher who died of cancer on January 4 of this year.

Corsi pitched 10 years in the big leagues, including three in Boston, and three years after retiring the Newton native became the first ex-major leaguer to play in the Oldtime game. That began a tradition that has since been carried forward by the likes of Oil Can Boyd and, more recently, Pedro Martinez.

Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersely, who was a teammate of Corsi with the 1989 Oakland Athletics, made an appearance at the 2022 edition of the event. Eckersely joined Suffolk's alum Pellerin in a question-and-answer, before Joey Corsi, Jims' 15-year-old son, threw out the first pitch.

In the 2022 game, Breslin donned the 1963 Sandy Koufax, Roberts wore the 1930 Red Sox jersey and Perellin repped a Joe Morgan Braves uniform to commemorate the pilgrimage. Learn more about the jerseys below.

Breslin and Roberts each got the chance to pitch a pair of innings to help the away team take the victory. Roberts added one RBI on a base hit to aid to the 11-3 win. Pellerin caught a pair of innings for the home team.

The trio is not the first members of Suffolk baseball to participate in the Oldtime game. The Rams have sent Nick Melchionna (1999), Tamayoa Manzanillo (2005) and former head coach, current Director of Athletics Cary McConnell (2011) to represent the University at the annual event in the past.

Brian Lentz of Harvard University, who wore it in 2000, later played in the minor leagues for the Seattle Mariners. 1952 BOSTON BRAVES No. 19 JOE MORGAN
worn by Suffolk alum Adam Pellerin

UNIFORM & TEAM HISTORY
Though he signed with the old Boston Braves in 1952, it wasn't until 1957 that Walpole native Joe Morgan made it to the big leagues with the Milwaukee Braves.

OLDTIME GAME HISTORY
This is the actual uniform worn by Joe Morgan when he managed in the Oldtime Baseball Game in 1998. Though he was originally signed by the Boston Braves in 1952, it was with the Milwaukee Braves in 1957 that he made his major-league debut. But Joe wanted to wear a Boston Braves uniform for the Oldtime Baseball Game, so we gave him a Boston uniform with his Milwaukee No. 19. Ben Crockett of Harvard University, who wore it in 2000, was later drafted by the Colorado Rockies and now works in the front office of the Boston Red Sox. Jeff Mackor of Boston College (2001) was later drafted by the Houston Astros. Zak Farkes of Harvard University (2003) was later drafted by the Red Sox. Tom Fitzgerald, after closing out a 17-season playing career in the National Hockey League, including the 2005-06 season with the Boston Bruins, wore it in 2006.
