BIDDEFORD, Maine – In its first year competing in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, Suffolk baseball secured its spot in the CCC Tournament, the league announced late Wednesday night.
The Rams took the second seed in POD B and will face top-seeded Endicott in the Pod Finals best-of-three series over the weekend.
The seeding was based on the conference winning percentage of teams that met the minimum number of games played (8), which was agree upon by the athletic directors prior to the first pitch of the 2021 campaign.
Suffolk locked up the second spot in POD B after beating Wentworth in a tiebreaker scenario. The Rams and Leopards each finished 4-4 against conference counterparts. Suffolk and Wentworth did not compete against one another so the determination of who would compete for the CCC crown was deferred to results versus opponents in the same pod by ranking order. The Rams split their four-game series with Endicott, while the Leopards were swept by the Gulls. That 2-2 record against EC gave Suffolk the upper hand and punched its ticket to the playoffs.
The Rams will head to Beverly, Massachusetts for the Pod Finals, which will be a best-of-three series, all of which will be nine-inning outings, with a doubleheader starting things off on Saturday, May 1. Should the teams split the double feature, they will return to North Field in the North Shore on Sunday, May 2 for a do-or-die battle. With the entirety of the series will be played at Endicott's home turn, Suffolk will play as the "home" team in the nightcap of Saturday's twinbill.
On the other side of the bracket Salve Regina secured the top seed of POD A with Roger Williams set to face the Seahawks.
The winners of the Pod Finals will advance to the CCC Championship series, which will also be a two-of-three series and take place next weekend, May 8-9.
From there, the CCC Championship will receive the league's automatic qualifier to the 2021 NCAA Division III Tournament. The regional round of the D3 Baseball Championship is set to begin Thursday, May 27.
