Western New England Cruises Past Baseball in Nightcap

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Suffolk baseball fell behind early and could not catch up as Western New England's offense surged past the Rams, 15-0, to close the two-game series Saturday afternoon at Trelease Park.

Western New England put three runs on the board in the home half of the first and piled on five more in the bottom of the third to grab an 8-0 margin.  

The Golden Bears defense combined with sluggish Suffolk bats kept the Rams off the scoreboard the rest of the way. WNE on the other hand added one run in the fourth and sixth and in fifth for the 15-0 victory.  


  • Charles Batcheldersuffered his first setback of the season as the junior allowed eight runs, four earned, on seven hits and three walks. 
  • Anthony Riga(1.0 IP, 1 R, 1 BB) and Johnny Maffei(2.0 IP, 6 R, 4H, 3BB) each saw time in relief. 
  • Jake Kawiecki improved to 3-0 on the year as the Golden Bears started allowed just three hits and two walks with four strikeouts through 4.0 innings. 
  • Bob Hamel picked up the save with the final 3.0 frames on his stat line that had two hits and three Ks.  


  • Will Hopkins' pair of hits were each good for extra bases with the freshman hitting a double and a triple.
  • Ben Isaakcame in as a pinch hitter and produced a double in his sole at bat. 
  • Brady Chant (1-3) and Rich Gilbride (1-2) each had one hit apiece. 


  • Hopkins recorded his first collegiate triple. 
  • Isaak's first collegiate hit was good for two bases. 

Suffolk is set to open its home slate Tuesday, April 3 versus Rhode Island College at East Boston Memorial Park at 4 p.m.
