2017 Academic All-District Baseball Team
BOSTON – Senior Matt Brenner of the Suffolk baseball team was named to the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA) Academic All-District team for the 2017 season, the organization announced Thursday afternoon.
Brenner is one of 11 NCAA Division III players in the New England region honored for combined excellence academically and athletics with first-team District 1 recognition. The Finance and Global Business major is one of three players from the GNAC to earn the honor and first Ram to pick up the accolade since Jake Cintolo in 2014.
First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-American honorees will be selected later this month.
The catcher from Eliot, Maine, has led Suffolk to its second straight second-seed in the GNAC Tournament, which the Rams get underway in tonight, Thursday, May 4 at East Boston Memorial Park versus third-seeded Lasell as double-elimination play begins. The team's co-captain sits third on the team in runs (31) and hits (39) with the fourth-most RBI (27) thanks to a slash line of .325/.447/.492.
Brenner has had a standout career at Suffolk, helping the Rams to back-to-back GNAC crowns and the program's first-ever consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament. Over the course of his campaign, he has picked up two GNAC All-Tourney nods, an All-GNAC second-team recognition and was named ECAC All-Tournament MVP in 2014. In 125 games played, Brenner has made 397 plate appearances, registering 111 hits, 29 of which went for extra base, for a .280 career average at the dish with an on-base percentage of .407 and a slugging rate of .390. to go with an near perfect fielding percentage of .984 with 613 putouts and 65 assists.
