Baseball Rallies in Sixth to Take Down Albertus Magnus 9-2 in Game 1

BOSTON – The Suffolk baseball team overcame a 2-0 deficit with a nine-run sixth to remain unbeaten in GNAC play, defeating the Falcons of Albertus Magnus, 9-2, Thursday afternoon at East Boston Memorial Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk found itself in an early 2-0 hole with Albertus Magnus using one run in the second and fourth, respectively. The Rams waited until the sixth to turn up the volume when they over turned the deficit and went through their line-up to grab a 9-2 advantage.

Sean Cameron got the rally going as the shortstop barreled a deep triple to right field and came in on a single down the left line by Seth Coiley. Matt Brenner wore a pitch and pinch hitter BJ Neil drew a walk to chuck the bags. Two batters later move Rams runners came in with Kevin Belskie knocking a RBI single to left and Curtis Tirone following suit with a single good for two runs.

A fresh Falcons arm did not stop Suffolk Kevin Higgins contributed a RBI single, before Brady Chant rocked a triple to left center to bring in two runners. Brenner's single through the left side plate Zach Grogan to end the scoring at nine runs.

Mark Fusco sealed up the win, retiring the side swinging in the top of the seventh.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Tirone and Brenner were perfect at the plate with the third baseman and catcher going 2-for-2 with one walk apiece. Tirone registered two RBIs and one run, while Brenner collected one RBI and one run scored.
  • Coiley put together a 2-for-3, one-RBI effort to round out Rams' batters with multiple hits.

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Fusco earned the win with a complete-game effort. The junior right handed pitcher let up two unearned runs on four hits with seven Ks and two walks.
  • Dan Zarnik wore the defeat. In 5.1 innings, he allowed six runs on seven hits with one strikeout and four walks.
  • Tom Moore came on in relief for the Falcons. He let up three runs on four hits in 0.2 frames. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk moves to 5-0 in the GNAC, its best start under Anthony Del Prete and best since going 9-0 to open league action in 2014.
  • Fusco remains undefeated in his all-time starts, moving to 2-0 on his career. He threw a career-high seven strikeouts.
  • The Rams won their second straight versus the Falcons.
