Baseball Walks Off with 4-3 Victory Over Montclair State, 4-3

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Senior Jon Lapolla hit a walkoff double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Suffolk baseball team to a 4-3 win in their 2016 spring trip opener over Montclair State as part of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

Montclair State (4-5) erased a two run deficit in the top half of the inning as junior Philip Scott singled home a pair to even the game at 3-3 with two outs.

Lapolla's lone hit of the contest would be the biggest as he sent home sophomore Brady Chant for the game-winner.

Chant was 3-for-5 with an RBI triple in the top of the seventh to help pace an 11-hit Suffolk (1-1) attack in their first win of the young season.

Junior Chuck Gibson made his 2016 debut on the mound going the first six, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out a career-high eight hitters in the no decision.

Suffolk opened the scoring in third as sophomore Seth Coiley drove in freshman Jake Frasca with a two-out single to right.

In the fifth, senior Drew Carter drove home junior Luke Ronchi who opened the inning off with a base hit before swiping one of his two stolen bases in the game.

Montclair State would score their first run of the game when sophomore Joe Foote drove in a run with one his two base hits in the game.

Frasca finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate for Suffolk as he led the seventh inning off with a double to right. He would later come around to score as Chant tripled to deep center putting Suffolk up 3-1 heading into the ninth.

Senior Cal Carroll (Methuen, Mass.) earned the victory on the mound for Suffolk, despite blowing his first save opportunity of the year.

Freshman Kyle Missry (Manasquan, N.J.) led the ninth off with a base hit up with middle before senior Kevin Alonso (North Bergen, N.J.) singled on the left side of the infield. After a sacrifice bunt, Carroll would record the second out of the inning on a shallow fly to center. Scott would then deliver a two strike single back up the middle to even the game. He would then steal second as Carroll was able to escape the jam with the go-ahead run in scoring position.

In the home half of the ninth, Chant would single with one out in the inning before stealing second. After advancing to third on a fielder's choice, junior Matt Brenner (Eliot, Me.) would then work a walk before stealing second base brining Lapolla to the plate. The senior clean-up hitter would drive the third pitch of the at-bat to deep right bringing home the game winning run.

Suffolk will be back in action on Saturday evening as they take on Gallaudet University at 6:30pm at Chain of Lakes Stadium.
