Baseball Splits Non-League Twinbill With Williams

The Suffolk University Baseball team and Williams College Ephs split a pair of 1-0 decisions in non-league baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Adams Field in Quincy.

Williams took game one, 1-0 in eight innings behind the right arm of sophomore Luke Rodino (Livingston, N.J.). Rodino  went all eight innings allowing just five hits while striking out four in the complete game shutout to improve to 3-4 on the mound this season.

Sophomore Jack Roberts (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the eighth as he singled to left to bring home the game's lone run. Roberts' RBI single plated freshman Lev Schechter (South Orange, N.J.) who led the inning off with a single and would later advance into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt.

Senior Josh Desai (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was the tough luck loser in game one as he went all eight allowing just the one run on four hits while striking out nine hitters.

Senior Frank Tierney (Hyde Park, Mass.) and junior Cal Carroll (Methuen, Mass.) combined on the shutout in game two to snap Suffolk's brief three game winless streak.

Tierney went the first six innings allowing just two hits while punching out three hitters. He would give way to Carroll in the seventh who recorded his fourth save of the season.

Williams would make things interesting in the last at-bat as freshman pinch-hitter Adam Regensburg (Pottstown, Pa.) doubled down the right field line with one out.  With two outs in the inning sophomore Jack Cloud (Wilmette, Ill.) would single to left. The game would end when the runner would round the third base bag hard, but was held up and touched by the third base coach thus being called out on interference for the final out of the ball game.

The victory moves Tierney to a 5-0 record on the season.

Suffolk scored their lone run of the ballgame in the second inning as they were able to load the bases with nobody out. Junior Rob Marks (Revere, Mass.) would lead off with a single before stealing second base. Following a walk to sophomore Sean Cameron (Milford, Conn.), senior Adam Johnson (Georgetown, Mass.) would lay a bunt down that would be mishandled creating the logjam on the bases. Sophomore BJ Neil (Lynnfield, Mass.) would ground into a four to three double play to help clear the big inning threat but would also bring Marks home around to score the game's lone run.

Junior Daniel Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) allowed just two hits in the loss on the mound for Williams. He struck out five while also issuing four walks to go along with three hit batters.

Williams drops to a 13-18 record on the season. They will round out the 2015 season with a non-league doubleheader at Springfield College on Sunday.

Suffolk (18-20) will travel to Campanelli Stadium in Brockton on Sunday for a non-conference twinbill with Newbury College starting at noon.
