Southern Maine Sweeps Twinbill From Baseball

Southern Maine University swept Suffolk University in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Florida to open their 2015 regular season.

Sophomore Matt Bender (Walpole, Mass.) was 3-for-4 with seven RBI in the opener, a 10-6 Huskies victory, while a six-run first inning helped lead them to a 9-5 game two win.

Game One: Southern Maine 10 Suffolk 6

The Huskies would put together a 14-hit attack in the opener led by Bender who opened the scoring with a two-run single in the first.

Southern Maine would tack on four more in the second. Freshman Devin Warren (Smithfield, Me.) would add an RBI single, before Bender tacked on two more runs with his second single.

Bender would continue his hot start hitting his first home run of the season, a three run blast on a long fly ball to left to help USM build up a 9-0 lead through four innings of play.

Suffolk would chip away at the deficit in the home half of the fourth when sophomore Matt Brenner (Eliot, Me.) and freshman Seth Coiley (Arlington, Mass.) each added RBI singles in the inning.

Brenner later blasted a three run homer of his own in the fifth to score sophomore Luke Ronchi (Randolph, N.J.) and junior Julien Plana (Miami, Fla.) to make it a 9-6 game.

Junior Shyler Scates (Jefferson, Me.) pitched the first five innings for the Huskies allowing four earned runs on eight hits to earn the win.

Brenner finished game one 3-for-4 offensively for Suffolk.

Game Two: Southern Maine 9 Suffolk 5

Junior Sam Dexter (Oakland, Me.) started a six run first inning with a two run triple to deep center as Southern Maine swept the doubleheader taking a 9-5 victory in game two.

Freshman Anthony Capuano (Bangor, Me.) added an RBI single before freshman Brandon Martins (Manorville, N.Y.) capped off the inning driving in a pair of runs with a single of his own as part of a five hit, six run first.

Dexter, Martins and junior Nick DiBiase (Portland, Me.) all drove in a pair of runs while sophomore Paul McDonough (Wells, Me.) was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.

Coiley and junior Jon Lapolla (Providence, R.I.) each had a pair of hits in the setback for Suffolk.

The setbacks drop Suffolk to a 2-4 start to the season. They will be back in action on Thursday afternoon when they take on Penn State Altoona at 2:00pm.
