Pair of Baseball Players Having Successful Summer

A pair of Suffolk University Baseball players are finding success on the diamond during the summer. Senior Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) and junior Josh Desai (Shrewsbury, Mass.) were named to the Valley Baseball League All-Star team as both are playing for the Winchester Royals this summer.

Cintolo is 18th in the league hitting .302 (26-for-86)  in 24 games played through July 10. Desai is currently 10th in the league among starters with a 2.15 ERA as he maintains a 1-2 record in five starts.

Cintolo recorded a hit in his lone at-bat during the All-Star game that showcased some of the league's top players. Desai pitched 1/3 of a scoreless inning, retiring the only batter that he faced.

The Valley League was formed in 1923 and became an NCAA-sanctioned league in 1961. The league adopted wooden bats in 1993.  The VBL is funded in part by a grant from Major League Baseball and is a member of the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball, a national affiliation of summer leagues.  The league has produced well over 1,000 professional baseball players.

All 12 teams as well as the League are not-for-profit.  The Valley League name is derived from the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, which is nestled between the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east and the Allegheny Mountains to the west.

The 12 teams play a two-division format. Each team plays a 44-game schedule beginning May 31st with playoffs beginning in the last week of July and extending into early August. The top four teams from each division will make up the 2013 playoff field.
