Mike Cunningham Named GNAC Baseball Player of the Year

Suffolk University Baseball senior Mike Cunningham (Syosset, N.Y.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Year for the 2013 season.

Cunningham currently leads all GNAC players with a .424 batting average and nine home runs, while his 42 runs batted in is the league's second highest total. He currently leads all players in the Division-III New England Region with his nine big flies, while his .513 on-base percentage and .720 slugging percentage also lead the GNAC.

The Suffolk cleanup hitter was 8-for-25 over this week's GNAC Tournament as he drove in eight runs over the six-game stretch. He had a two-run double in Saturday night's 4-2 victory over top-seeded Johnson & Wales University and then connected on a two-run opposite field home run to left en route to a game one 7-2 Suffolk win over St. Joseph's College as part of the finals doubleheader.

In four seasons for Suffolk, Cunningham has hit at a .334 clip with 12 home runs while driving in 75 runs.

Head Baseball Coach Cary McConnell commended Cunningham on what he has helped bring the program. "Mike has been an invaluable asset to our team this year not just in his play but also through his leadership. His commitment to bringing the best out himself and his teammates is a reflection of strong character. He has deserved his success this year. We are very proud of what he has been able to accomplish for our team."

Along with his Player of the Year honors and All-Tournament team honors, Cunningham was also named a first-team All-Conference selection by the GNAC.
