Baseball Advances To Sunday's GNAC Championship

The Suffolk University Baseball team won both of their games on Saturday afternoon to once again set up a matchup in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship with the St. Joseph's College Monks on Sunday.

Suffolk defeated Lasell College, 5-2 in the morning game of the weekend's double elimination tournament before junior Jonathan Richard (North Reading, Mass.) fired a complete game six-hitter to defeat the Johnson & Wales University Wildcats in the nightcap, 4-2.

Suffolk got off to a quick start in the opener as junior Mac Jacobson (Norfolk, Mass.) led game one off with a leadoff home run to right field.

Junior Steve Chamberland (Bristol, Conn.) pitched 6 2/3 innings to move to 4-1 on the year, while sophomore Cal Carroll (Methuen, Mass.) earned his third save recording the final seven outs of the game.

Juniors Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) and Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) recorded RBIs in the second inning, before the Rams were able to cushion their lead in the eighth with a pair of bases loaded walks.

Richard won his GNAC leading sixth game in the evening as he struck out four, only allowing one earned run for his second complete game of the year.

Senior Mike Cunningham (Syosset, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the first with a two-run double to right center to plate Jones and Cintolo.

Jacobson would add some insurance in the fourth as he blooped a single to left to plate sophomore Justin Knight (Great Meadows, N.J.). Knight singled with two outs in the inning before stealing second base to get into scoring position.

Suffolk would tack on another run in the bottom of the eighth as junior Mike Muse (Milton, Mass.) came around to score from second on an infield error by the Wildcats' third baseman.

Suffolk and St. Joe's will now meet for the sixth consecutive season for the GNAC Championship with the Monks winning the past three titles. The winner of Sunday's Championship will earn an automatic qualifier bid into this year's NCAA Division-III Tournament.
