Baseball Takes Doubleheader From Anna Maria

The Suffolk University Baseball team swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader from Anna Maria College on Wednesday Afternoon. Head Coach Cary McConnell recorded his 500th career victory with the pair of wins as junior Frank Tierney (Hyde Park, Mass.) recorded a pair of saves and an inside the park home run by junior Mac Jacobson (Norfolk, Mass.) helped propel a 10-9 game one victory. Suffolk put together a 14 hit attack in game two for a 9-3 victory as junior Steve Chamberland (Bristol, Conn.) earned his third win of the season on the mound.

Game One

It was a wild back and forth effort in the opener as both Suffolk and Anna Maria scored six runs in different innings as the Rams outlasted the AMCATS in game one 10-9.

Suffolk opened the scoring in the first as junior Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) led the bottom of the inning with a single to right center. Senior Mike Cunningham (Syosset, N.Y.) would knock in the game's first run with a single that took a wild hop in the infield to send in Jones for the 1-0 edge.

Anna Maria would answer in the second inning as freshman Julian Diaz (Providence, R.I.) singled to left to plate junior John Sullivan (Southbury, Conn.) to even the game at a run a piece.

Suffolk would take advantage of a few AMCATS' miscues in the bottom of the second as they scored six times in the inning. Jones would knock in the first run of the inning with a single to plate sophomore JC Collette (Amesbury, Mass.) would reached on an infield error to start things. Jacobson would hit a ground ball to the right side of the infield that was misplayed as two more runs would come home. Two more runs would come in later in the inning as Cunningham hit a seemingly harmless groundball to first base but the pitcher missed the base trying to record what would have been the inning ending out as both Jones and Jacobson came around to score extending the inning. Senior Chris Stanley (Placentia, Calif.) capped off the inning with a triple to right as Suffolk took a 7-1 lead after two innings.

Anna Maria would even things up however with a six run rally of their own in the fifth inning. Senior Kevin Wodatch (Wallingford, Conn.) started the inning off with a single to right before senior Mike Guarnieri (Wallingford, Conn.) added another single to put runners on the corners. Senior Justin Hyland (Spencer, Mass.) would knock in the first run of the inning as he rolled an infield single in between the mound and first base that couldn't be played. After an infield error extended the inning, freshman Patrick Bradanese (Billerica, Mass.) kept things alive with an RBI single before Diaz laced a double down the leftfield line to plate two more runs and chase Suffolk junior starter Jonathan Richard (North Reading, Mass.) from the game. Wodatch, who started the inning off with a single would make it a 7-7 game as his base hit to left center scored Diaz for the game tying run.

Suffolk would quickly answer however as junior Mike Muse (Milton, Mass.) led things off with a single to right before sophomore Justin Knight (Great Meadows, N.J.) drew a walk. Jones' bunt was played back to the mound got the force out at third base on a bang bang play bring Jacobson to the plate. Jacobson would connect on his first career collegiate home run as he sliced a ball down the left field line all the way to fence while motoring around the bases for the inside the park job.

Sophomore Cal Carroll (Methuen, Mass.) worked two innings of relief to earn his second victory of the season on the mound for Suffolk.

Carroll would run into some trouble in the seventh after recording the first two outs of the inning with relative ease. A walk to Diaz would bring freshman Anthony Risotti (Templeton, Mass.) to the plate, as he would reach on a dropped flyball to right. Wodatch would connect on his third base hit of the game with a single up the middle bringing both runners around the bases and getting himself into scoring position with the tying run.

Tierney would enter the game recording the final out and preserving the victory for Suffolk with a lineout to third base.

Wodatch finished the game with three RBI on three hits. He also started on the mount going four innings allowing nine runs, five earned on eight hits.

Diaz was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored while also driving in three as part of a 13 hit AMCATS attack, while Guanieri also recorded three hits.

Knight reached base for Suffolk in all four of his plate appearances as he drew four walks in the contest and scored twice. Muse was 3-for-4 in the opener, while Jones and Jacobson also collected a pair of hits.

Game Two

All nine Suffolk hitters would have at least one hit in the nightcap as Suffolk improves to a 21-3 record on the season and 10-0 in GNAC play.

Stanley was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while Jacobson was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and runs scored to complete a 7 RBI 4-for-6 performance at the plate scoring four times.

Collette opened the Suffolk scoring in the bottom of the second inning as he hit a towering home run to left, his third of the season.

Chamberland allowed three runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings pitched as he moves to 3-0 in four starts. He gave way to Tierney who punched out a pair of hitters to earn his fourth save of the season.

Wodatch and Guanieri each had big games in the nightcap for the AMCATS as the duo combined for six of Anna Maria's eight hits in game two. Guanieri was 3-for-3 as he connected on run scoring singles in the first and third innings. Wodatch was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.

The losses drop Anna Maria to an 11-14 record on the year and 5-5 mark in GNAC play.
