Baseball Takes Two From Norwich

Baseball Takes Two From Norwich

The Suffolk University Baseball improved to 17-3 on the season sweeping a pair of games from the Norwich University Cadets in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon. Five Suffolk pitchers worked both ends of the day without allowing an earned run while junior Devan Jones knocked in five runs in the two games combined and junior Jack Sullivan (Hamilton, N.Y.) was 4-for-4 at the plate in the nightcap.

Game One

Sophomore Cal Caroll (Methuen, Mass.) carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning in his first start of the season as Suffolk took game one, 6-1.

Suffolk would plate a pair of runs in the second inning to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. Senior Chris Stanley (Placentia, Calif.) led the inning off with a single to left and then took second base on some heads up baserunning as the ball was bobbled in left field moving him into scoring position. After a botched pickoff play, Stanley advanced to third base when the throw went into centerfield and he came around to score on an RBI groundout by sophomore Adam Johnson (Georgetown, Mass.). Suffolk would take advantage of another Cadets' error later in the inning when junior James McConville (Medford, Mass.) advanced to second base on an infield overthrow and came around to score off a bloop single to center by sophomore Justin Knight (Great Meadows, N.J.).

Senior Mike Cunningham (Syosset, N.Y.) would add a sacrifice fly in the third inning, before Stanley singled in junior Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) with two outs to make it a 4-0 ball game.

Jones and the Rams would add some insurance in the fourth inning as the junior second baseman knocked in Johnson for their sixth run.

Senior Sam Philbrook (Rochester, Mass.) broke up Carroll's no-hit bid in the fifth with one out as he singled down the left field line. Freshman Mike Doyle (Weymouth, Mass.) drove in the lone Cadets' run of the day in the sixth inning with an RBI single to plate freshman Brian Baker (Cheshire, Mass.) after the inning was extended on an infield error with two outs.

Sophomore Mike Massuli (Prospect, Conn.) worked a scoreless seventh inning in relief for the Rams.

Suffolk managed only five hits in game one but took advantage of five Norwich errors and four base on balls.

Stanley was the lone player on either side to collect multiple hits in the contest as he had a pair.

Game Two

Devan Jones connected on doubles in the second and sixth inning each time scoring two runs to help pace the Suffolk offense to a 9-0 victory.

The bottom third of the Suffolk lineup scored five times in the game as Sullivan and freshman Alex Gabler (Uniontown, Pa.) each scored a pair of runs.

Sullivan also added an RBI single in the third inning to plate Johnson who led the inning off with a double to right as part of a 2-for-4 effort in game two.

Johnson had a solid day for Suffolk as he combined for a 3-for-7 outing scoring a pair of runs and also adding an RBI.

Three Suffolk pitchers combined on the shutout in the second game. Sophomore Dan Shields (Haverhill, Mass.) earned the win as he went the first four innings allowing three hits while striking out one hitter. Freshman TJ Fearon (Colchester, Conn.) was solid in middle relief as he punched out three hitters in two innings of work only allowing a single, while sophomore Paul Pollano (North Andover, Mass.) closed out the day in the seventh.

Cintolo reached base safely in all four of his plate appearances in game two as he walked, was hit by a pitch and hit two doubles bringing his GNAC leading total to 13 on the season.

Freshman Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) was the lone Norwich player to reach base safely multiple times in game two as he singled in the sixth inning while also drawing a walk in his second at-bat in the third inning.

The sweep drops Norwich to a 1-12 mark on the year, while they fall to 0-4 in GNAC play.

Norwich will travel to Masconomet Regional High School in Middleton, MA for a Sunday afternoon with Emerson College.

The pair of victories moves Suffolk to 6-0 in GNAC play thus far, while they improve to 17-3 on the season.

Suffolk will be back in action on Sunday afternoon as they travel to Nashua, N.H. to take on the Rivier University Raiders at Holman Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05.
