Stanley, Jones Combine For Baseball's Sweep

Senior Chris Stanley (Placentia, Calif.) was a combined 6-for-7 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader to lead the Suffolk University Baseball team to a sweep over Lasell College on Wednesday afternoon. Stanley was a perfect 4-for-4 in a game one 12-2 victory, while junior Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) hit a walk-off bases loaded single in the nightcap to move Suffolk to a 15-3 overall mark as they have won all four of their GNAC contests to start the season.

Game One

Suffolk combined for 15 hits in the opener as Stanley and Jones collected seven hits each and scored five runs to pace the Rams offensively.

Junior Jonathan Richard (North Reading, Mass.) moved to 5-0 on the year for Suffolk and he pitched 5 1/3 innings striking out six hitters.

The Rams jumped out early with four runs in the first as back to back walks to Jones and junior Mac Jacobson (Norfolk, Mass.) would start things. After a double steal, junior Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) knocked in the game's first run with a groundout before senior Mike Cunningham (Syosset, N.Y.) singled to plate Jacobson for the 2-0 edge. Suffolk would take advantage of some wildness as the inning went on as they scored their other two runs on passed balls.

Jones would tack on a two run triple as part of five run third inning for Suffolk, while Jacobson and junior James McConville (Medford, Mass.) also added RBI singles in the frame.

Stanley would pick up his fourth hit of the day, an RBI single to left in the sixth inning as Suffolk would add on three more insurance runs. Sophomore J.C. Collette (Amesbury, Mass.) and junior Danny Gunn (Medford, Mass.) also joined the charge as they hit consecutive run scoring singles to left in the inning.

Junior Billy Uberti (Newton, Mass.) was 3-for-4 in the opener as he drove in a run in the fifth inning. He also added a double in his first at-bat down the right field line. Freshman Wes Hurty (Windsor, Conn.) accounted for the other Lasers' run with an RBI infield single in the sixth inning.

Lasell collected eight hits in game one highlight by Uberti's three. Junior Bobby Ellard (Medfield, Mass.) was also 2-for-3 in the game.

Sophomore Cal Carroll (Methuen, Mass.) pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief for Suffolk punching out two hitters while allowing no hits.

Collette and Cintolo each had a pair of hits in the contest for the Rams.

Game Two

Devan Jones sent Suffolk to a 15-3 record in the nightcap as he hit a walk-off single off the left field fence with the bases loaded and outfield drawn in with no outs to clinch the doubleheader sweep.

With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh junior Mike Muse (Milton, Mass.) led the inning off with a single. Junior Jack Sullivan (Hamilton, N.Y.) then laid down a sacrifice bunt to try to advance Muse to scoring position, but the Lasers' misplayed the bunt in the infield. After a passed ball, the Lasers would intentionally walk sophomore Justin Knight (Great Meadows, N.J.) to set up the force at any base bringing Jones to the plate.

The single was Jones' lone hit in game two as Suffolk only mustered six hits in the pitchers duel.

Junior Steve Chamberland (Bristol, Conn.) was strong on the mound for Suffolk as he picked up a no-decision. The junior southpaw struck out six hitters in 5 1/3 innings of work before giving way to the bullpen as he worked his way out of a couple jams in the middle of the game.

Both teams had opportunities to score early on.

Suffolk would have runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs in the second inning as Cunningham led the inning off with a walk. Stanley would follow him with his fifth consecutive hit of the afternoon as both runners took an extra base on a bobbled ball in the outfield. The Rams couldn't capitalize in the inning however as they failed to get a ball past the infield to score the first run of the ball game.

Sophomore Jackson Gervais (Rehoboth, Mass.) would lead the Lasers' third inning off with a double but was stranded as Chamberland recorded the next two outs with strikeouts before ending the threat with a fly ball to right.

Lasell would lead off the fourth inning with another double, this time coming off the bat of junior Dustin Brown (Falmouth, Mass.). After a sacrifice bunt to get him over to third with one down, Chamberland would record back-to-back strikeouts again as he avoided another threat.

Mac Jacobson would plate the game's first run in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly as Suffolk built a short 1-0 lead. Sullivan got the inning started for Suffolk with a single to left before Knight followed him with a single. A walk to Jones would load the bases setting up Jacobson for the RBI opportunity.

The Lasers would answer in their next at-bat as sophomore Matt Sammarco (New Cannaan, Conn.) singled up the middle with two outs to plate Uberti, who led off the inning reaching on an infield error.

Junior Frank Tierney (Hyde Park, Mass.) struck out a pair in 1 2/3 innings of relief as he earned the victory, his third of the season.

Sophomore Greg Sherman (Marshfield, Mass.) was the tough luck loser on the mound for the Lasers. He went six innings only allowing five hits and two runs while punching out five hitters in the game.

Lasell will be back in action on Friday afternoon with a single non-conference game against Newbury College at 7:00pm.

Suffolk has a full weekend in front of them as they play a pair of GNAC doubleheaders. They will host Norwich University on Saturday afternoon at Adams Field beginning at noon, before travelling to Rivier University for a 1:00pm start on Sunday.
