Baseball Outslugs Keene State 15-12

The Suffolk University Baseball team won a 15-12 slugest with Keene State College on Friday afternoon as part of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

Sophomore JC Collette (Amesbury, Mass.) was 4-for-5 on the day with a pair of RBI, while junior Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) was 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles as he ties the all-time Suffolk mark with 40 career two-base hits.

Sophomore Eli Libby (Sudbury, Mass.) pitched 4 1/3 innings of relief to record the win as three Suffolk relievers combined for six innings out of the bullpen to provide Suffolk some stability as they win their sixth straight to move to a 6-1 record.

For the second straight day the Rams erased a four-run deficit as they scored five runs in the top of the fourth after trailing through three 7-3.

Keene State got a pair of runs in the first inning as freshman Cody Dube (Windham, Me.) knocked in the first run of the contest with a single to left to plate freshman Billy Hartmann (Greenland, N.H.). Later in the inning, freshman Brett Dootson (Marlborough, Conn.) would draw a hit by pitch with the bases loaded as the Owls jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead.

Suffolk would answer in the top of the second inning to even things up as junior Mike Muse (Milton, Mass.) tripled down the right field line to score senior Chris Stanley (Placentia, Calif.) for Suffolk's first run of the ball game. Muse would come home later in the inning to score on a wild pitch.

The Owls would come back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame as Dootson once again took advantage of a free pass with the bases loaded, this time drawing a walk before sophomore Ian Seawards (Dover, N.H.) singled home sophomore Tanner Chase (York, Me.) to give Keene State another two run edge.

Keene State moved it to 7-3 in the bottom of the third inning as senior Greg Bates (Salem, N.H.) crushed his first home run of the season on an 0-2 pitch far over the left field wall for a three run bomb.

Suffolk would answer in their next at bat as junior Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) led the fourth inning off with a towering home run to left, his first of the season. The next three Suffolk hitters would reach base safely as junior Mac Jacobson (Norfolk, Mass.) and senior Jhonneris Mendez (Boston, Mass.) each drew walks in between a single by Cintolo. Stanley added a sacrifice fly to left, before Muse added another run as the Rams took advantage of an Owls' infield error to bring them within one. Mendez would score later in the inning on a passed ball before Collette gave Suffolk an 8-7 lead as he capped the inning off driving in Muse with an RBI double to left center.

In the bottom of the fifth Dube struck again as he drove in a pair of runs to put the Owls back on top as he singled to right.

The Rams would take the lead for good in the sixth inning as they put up four runs, as Collette added picked up another RBI with a single to left to plate Stanley, who led the inning off with a walk. Muse would score his second run of the game later in the inning on a passed ball before sophomore Justin Knight (Hackettstown, N.J.) hit a sacrifice fly to center to plate Collette.

Jacobson then came up with his first of two RBI singles on the day as he capped the sixth inning off with a two-out single to left. He would later add another run scoring base hit as part of a three run eighth inning for the Rams as he finished the day 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.

Collette doubled to lead off the eighth inning before coming around to score on Jacobson's single.

Cintolo would connect on his second double of the day later in the inning as he drove a pitch off the left field wall to score Jacobson and junior James McConville (Medford, Mass.).

Cintolo's eighth inning double is already his seventh of the 2013 season as he ties Nick Martinho's (2008) program record of 40 through 97 career games played.

Sophomore Cal Carroll (Methuen, Mass.) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for Suffolk to earn his first career collegiate save.

Suffolk recorded 15 hits on the day, the fourth time this season in seven games they have put out double digits in hits for a game.

Muse finished the day 3-for-6 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI, while Stanley knocked in two runs for Suffolk and also scored twice.

McConville scored a pair of runs for the Rams as he drew three base on balls and a hit by pitch as he reached base four times in six plate appearances. The Suffolk lineup combined for eight walks on the day.

Hartmann helped pace a 13-hit offensive attack for the Owls as he was 3-for-5 on the day with four runs scored. Dube and Bates each drove in three runs for Keene State, while junior Andrew Gummow (Brookline, Mass.) added a pair of hits. Seven Owls recorded an RBI in the contest for Keene State. The loss drops them to a 5-9 record on the season.

Suffolk will conclude their spring trip on Saturday morning as they take on Westfield State University at 10:00am at Lake Myrtle Park before flying back north to Boston later in the evening.
