Collette, Saia Lift Suffolk To Third Straight Win

The Suffolk University Baseball team picked up their third straight win with a 7-4 victory over Dickinson College on Monday evening as part of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

Sophomore JC Collette (Amesbury, Mass.) was 2-for-3 driving in four runs on the night while sophomore Joe Saia (Everett, Mass.) threw six innings to pick up the win for the Rams on the mound.

For the fourth straight game Suffolk scored the first runs of the game as they plated five in the top half of the first inning.

After three consecutive walks to load the bases, senior Jhonneris Mendez (Boston, Mass.) plated the game's first run with a sacrifice fly to center to score senior Chris Stanley (Placentia, Calif.). Junior Mike Muse (Milton, Mass.) then singled knocking home Suffolk's second run as junior Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) came across to score. Collette would cap off the inning as he connected on a three-run homer to left as the Rams came out early with a 5-0 lead.

Collette added a two-out single in the top of the third to plate senior Mike Cunningham (Syosset, N.Y.) as Suffolk built a 6-0 lead through the first two and a half innings of play.

Saia was solid on the mound as he allowed two runs on four hits through six innings of work before giving way to the bullpen.

Sophomore Dan Shields (Haverhill, Mass.) and junior Frank Tierney (Hyde Park, Mass.) would combine to finish the final three frames for Suffolk as they recorded the final six outs of the game in order. Tierney pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth to record his first save of the season.

Cintolo added some insurance for Suffolk with an RBI single in the sixth inning for Suffolk.

The Rams managed only four hits in the game, but their patience at the plate paid dividends as they drew a total of 10 walks including four by Cunningham. Cunningham scored a pair of runs for Suffolk.

Suffolk will be off on Tuesday afternoon as they start the second half of their spring trip on Wednesday afternoon with a 12:00pm matchup with FDU-Florham.
