Desai, Baseball Pick Up First Win of 2013

Sophomore Josh Desai (Shrewsbury, Mass.) pitched the Suffolk University Baseball team to their first win of the 2013 season as the Rams topped Washington College 8-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Mike Cunningham (Syosset, N.Y.) connected on his second home run in as many days as part of a four run first inning as Suffolk jumped out early on the Shoremen.

Junior Mac Jacobson (Norfolk, Mass.) drew a hit by pitch to lead off the bottom of the first inning to get the game started offensively for Suffolk. Jacobson stole second and then came around to score on a single by senior Chris Stanley (Placentia, Calif.) for the game's first run. Two hitters later Cunningham hit a three-run homer over the right field fence to cap the big inning to start the game for Suffolk as their first four hitters came around to score.

Desai was solid over seven innings of work on the mound for Suffolk as he scattered eight hits on the day only allowing one run while striking out three hitters.

Freshman Dan Shields (Haverhill, Mass.) pitched the final two frames for Suffolk as he only allowed one run on two hits. Shields punched out three hitters while retiring the side in order to finish off the game in the ninth.

Junior Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) was 3-for-5 on the day for Suffolk to help pace a 13-hit offensive attack. Cintolo and Cunningham each had three hits on the day, while sophomore J.C. Collette (Amesbury, Mass.) was 2-for-4 including an RBI double in the fifth inning.

Suffolk played well in all phases of the game on Saturday as they turned a pair of double plays defensively and also stole five bases in the contest.

Stanley was 1-for-3 in the game as he scored a pair of runs and also drove in two for Suffolk.

Suffolk will be back in action on Sunday afternoon as they continue their annual spring trip as part of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. Suffolk will take on the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg at 3:30pm at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven.
