Baseball Suffers 10-5 Setback in Season Opener

Thomas More College scored seven runs in the eighth inning to spoil the 2013 season opener for the Suffolk University Baseball team, 10-5 on Friday afternoon.

The Saints sent 12 hitters to the plate in the top half of the eighth inning as they overcame a one run deficit to improve to 5-1 on the season. Seven straight hitters would reach base in the rally for Thomas College as they erased a solid start by Suffolk senior Jhonneris Mendez (Boston, Mass.) for their third straight win.

Mendez battled through seven innings of work for Suffolk as he allowed two runs, one earned while scattering five hits and striking out seven hitters on the day.

Senior Mike Cunningham (Syosset, N.Y.) was 2-for-4 on the day and connected on his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the bottom of the eighth inning for Suffolk.

Junior Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) scored three runs as he was 2-for-4 in the contest. Jones'  put the Rams ahead 2-1 in the fifth as he hit a triple off the left centerfield fence to plate junior Jack Sullivan (Hamilton, N.Y.) to give the Rams their second lead of the game. Jones later came around to score inning the inning on an RBI groundout by junior Mac Jacobson (Norfolk, Mass.).

Suffolk opened the game scoring the first run of the contest in the home half of the first as Jones started off the season for the Rams reaching second base on an infield throwing error. After Jacobson moved him over to third, junior Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) plated the first Suffolk run of the season with a groundout.

Thomas More outhit the Rams 15-5 on the day as the Saints took advantage of a shaky Suffolk bullpen that allowed eight runs on 10 hits between four pitchers.

Suffolk will look to turn things around on Saturday afternoon as they take on Washington College as they continue their spring trip as part of the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational. First pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 3:30pm at Chain of Lakes Park.
