Baseball Falls In Season Finale to MIT 5-1

In the final game of the 2012 season the MIT Engineers (22-14) defeated the Suffolk University Rams (20-24-1) by a 5-1 score on Monday evening at Adams Field in Quincy.

Sophomore Sean Karson (Winter Park, Fla.) drove in three runs with a pair of hits while senior A.J. Hansborough (Deltona, Fla.) put together a 3-for-5 effort at the plate for the Engineers who round out the 2012 season with a 22-14 overall record.

MIT staked themselves to a quick 2-0 lead in the top half of the first inning with senior Torre Swanson (Redding, Calif.) leading the game off with a double down the left field line. Swanson came around to score on the next play due to a Rams' infield error that reached left field for the game's first run. Hansborough later muscled a single to left to plate senior Zach Carr (Chatham, N.J.) in the inning.

The Engineers would add a pair of runs later in the third as Karson drove in a pair of runs with a single after another Suffolk error extended the inning as MIT built a 4-0 edge.

Senior Chris Hendrix (Richardson, Tex.) moved to 5-1 on the mound for MIT as allowed one run on six hits through five innings of work.

Sophomore Rob Bertucci (Belleville, Ill.) pitched three scoreless innings, while junior Henry Zhu (Overland Park, Kan.) threw a 1-2-3 ninth with two punchouts as the MIT bullpen held the Rams at bay with four scoreless innings of work.

The lone offensive highlight of the night for Suffolk was sophomore Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) tying the single season record for doubles as he notched his 17th two-base knock of the year in the third inning. It was the second year in a row Cintolo has set a Suffolk season record against the Engineers as he broke the single season hits record last year against them with his 70th hit of the year. Cintolo finished the year with 77 hits. His 17 doubles this year ties the mark previously set by Joe Duca during the 2000 campaign.

The Rams lone run of the evening came in the third inning as sophomore Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) led the inning off with a single that was followed by Cintolo's double. Junior Jhonneris Mendez (Boston, Mass.) drove in Jones with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Freshman Josh Desai (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was the tough luck loser once again on the mound for the Rams as he finishes the year with a 1-4 mark. Desai allowed just one earned run in seven innings of work while striking out six.

Prior to the game, Suffolk honored the four graduating senior members of the 2012 team: Dan and Time Belanger (Raynham, Mass.), Joe Harvey (Reading, Mass.) and Brian Svensson (Wilmington, Mass.).

The loss rounds out the 2012 season for Suffolk as they finish with a 20-24-1 record. It is the first time since the 1993 season the Rams will finish a season with a sub .500 winning percentage.
