Baseball Takes Two From Norwich

The Suffolk University Baseball team swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) double header on Sunday afternoon taking two games at the hands of the Norwich University Cadets to conclude the 2012 regular season. With the wins the Rams secure the number four seed in the GNAC playoffs as they will host Albertus Magnus College on Tuesday afternoon.

Sophomore Mac Jacobson (Norfolk, Mass.) was a perfect 4-for-4 on the day with a pair of RBI in both games combined, while junior Mike Cunningham (Syosset, N.Y.) broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning of game two with a two run single to left as the Rams finish with an 11-5 mark in conference play and improve to 17-20-1 on the year.

Game One: Suffolk 6 Norwich 1

Senior Brian Svensson (Wilmington, Mass.) threw a complete game four hitter to guide the Rams to the win in the opener. The senior hurler earned his first win of the season in three starts as he did not allow an earned run while striking out a pair.

Suffolk scored a run in each of the first two innings of the contest. Sophomore Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) scored the first run of the game on a passed ball, as he reached on an infield error with two outs.

Jacobson plated the second run of the game in the following inning with an RBI single back up the middle that sent Cunningham around to score as the Rams moved up 2-0.

In the fifth inning Cintolo came through with a bases clearing triple to deep center that would plate Jacobson and freshman Justin Knight (Hackettstown, N.J.) as the Rams built a 4-1 lead.

Suffolk would add an RBI single in the sixth inning by Cunningham, who plated junior Chris Stanley (Orange County, Calif.) before Jacobson rounded out the offense with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Game Two: Suffolk 5 Norwich 3

With a 3-3 score and one out in the top half of the seventh inning, Mike Cunningham delivered with a single to left that would score Cintolo and sophomore pinch-runner Danny Gunn (Medford, Mass.) with the go ahead runs for the twinbill sweep for Suffolk.

Sophomore Jonathan Richard (North Reading, Mass.) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn his first collegiate career victory on the mound for the Rams.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the third, sophomore Mike Muse (Milton, Mass.) would knock in the first Suffolk run of the ball game with an RBI single through the left side of the infield. A misplayed double play ball would send the second run of the game home for the Rams, before Chris Stanley rounded out the scoring for Suffolk with a fielder's choice later in the inning.

In game two, Suffolk collected 10 hits as Muse, Cintolo, Cunningam and Jacobson each had a pair.

Freshman Eli Libby (Sudbury, Mass.) allowed three runs over five innings while striking out seven in his first start of the season on the hill for Suffolk.
