Bats Finally Wake Up In GNAC Sweep of Rivier

The Suffolk University Baseball team had their bats wake up in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) sweep over the Rivier College Raiders on Saturday afternoon. The Rams combined for 42 runs and 45 hits in the two games combined as they took a 26-4 game one victory and used a 16-1 game two win for the twinbill sweep.

Junior Chris Stanley (Orange County, Calif.) was 3-for-4 with five RBI in game one as the Rams combined for 26 hits in the game. Sophomore Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) tied a career-high with five hits in the opener as he also drove in four runs and scored five times himself.

Stanley finished the day 7-for-11 combined with eight RBI and two triples, while Jones was nearly perfect going 7-for-8 at the plate with three triples and four runs batted in.

Junior Mitch Monke (Springfield, Ohio) pushed his record on the mound to 3-3 with a game one win as he allowed one earned run on five hits in five innings of work, striking out three hitters.

Sophomore Steve Chamberland (Bristol, Conn.) cruised in a complete game effort in the nightcap. Chamberland retired the first 11 hitters he faced, as he worked five perfect 1-2-3 frames in the game to move to 2-2 on the mound. Chamberland allowed one unearned run in the seventh inning while he struck out four without issuing a walk.

Junior Mike Cunningham (Syosset, N.Y.) reached base in seven of 10 plate appearances on the day for the Rams, collecting four hits and three walks while scoring five runs and driving home four. Freshman Justin Knight (Hackettstown, N.J.) also collected four hits and four RBI on the day for the Rams.

Junior John DiBenedetto (Tampa, Fla.) was 3-for-6 combined for the Raiders as he had a 2-for-3 performance in game two. DiBenedetto drove in a run in game one for Rivier.

Sophomore JJ Montello (Nashua, N.H.) collected a pair of RBI on the day for the Raiders as well.

The double header marks the end of the regular season for Rivier, who fall to a 5-32 overall mark and 3-13 GNAC record.

Suffolk will round out their regular on Sunday as they travel to Norwich University for a GNAC double header with the Cadets at noon.
