Strong Pitching Performance Lifts Suffolk over Falcons 4-2
WEST HAVEN, Conn. (April 14, 2012) – A stellar pitching performance from Suffolk's Josh Desai led to a 4-2 victory for the Rams over the Albertus Magnus baseball team in game one of its Saturday afternoon double-header at Quigley Stadium.
Suffolk used a four-hit fourth inning to score three runs en route to its GNAC victory. The win improved the Rams to 11-16-1 on the year and 5-3 in GNAC play. The loss moved the Falcons to 7-17 overall and 3-6 in the league standings.
A hit batter in the first inning was the only base runner for Suffolk until Jake Cintolo registered the Rams' first hit of the game with a single to left in the fourth inning. Cintolo advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt before scoring on an RBI single from J.C. Collette. A double by Chris Stanley put two Rams in scoring position before Jack Sullivan registered a two-RBI double to left to give Suffolk a 3-0 lead.
A four-pitch walk by Robert Gambardella (North Haven, Conn.) in the second inning gave the Falcons their only base runner until the fifth inning. Albertus scored its first run of the game on a fielder's choice ground out by Nick Sedia (Bronx, N.Y.) as Anthony Pellegrino (Branford, Conn.) crossed home plate.
Suffolk loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh and scored just one run on an RBI groundout.
Jon Almonte (New York, N.Y.) singled with one out to begin the Falcons' late-inning rally. Sedia battled from being down in the count at 0-2 to earning his fourth walk of the season. After Almonte was picked off trying to advance to third, Fanol Prevalla (Berlin, Conn.) reached on a throwing error to first as Sedia scored on the play.
Freshman Mike Barillaro (Meriden, Conn.) made his seventh start of the mound for the Falcons this season as he took the loss, dropping to 1-4 on the year. Barillaro threw seven innings and gave up five hits and four runs, while striking out four batters.
Suffolk's Josh Desai picked up his first win of the season as he threw all seven innings, while giving up just two hits in the contest.
