Baseball Posts 5-2 Victory over Roger Williams


The Suffolk University Baseball team used a four-run seventh inning to top the Roger Williams University Seahawks, 5-2 on Friday afternoon.

Sophomore Jack Sullivan (Hamilton, Mass.) broke a 2-2 with one out in the seventh with an RBI single to left field as the Rams snap a six-game skid for the sixth overall win of the season.

Sophomore Steve Chamberland (Bristol, Conn.) earned his first career collegiate victory on the mound for the Rams as he went six plus innings surrending two runs on five hits while striking out four hitters, before the Rams bullpened combined for three scoreless innings of work, highlighted by freshman Mike Masulli (Prospect, Conn.) who earned his first save of the year.

The Seahawks staked themselves to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Sophomore Mike Pascarella (Milford, Conn.) started the scoring with a one-out single to left and was followed by a single through the right side of the infield by junior John Oppenheimer (Westport, Conn.). After a double steal to move both runners up into scoring position, freshman Chris Travers (East Freetown, Mass.) knocked in the game's first run with an infield single, before senior Trevor Manzi (Beverly, Mass.) singled up the middle to stake the Hawks with a two run lead.

Chamberland would cruise through the middle innings as he only allowed two baserunners through the second and sixth innings before leaving the game in the seventh after a lead-off walk.

Suffolk's offense finally woke up in the seventh inning with four runs as sophomore Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) started the frame with a ground-rule double to left center. Sophomore Mike Muse (Milton, Mass.) would knock Cintolo home with a single to left field before junior Chris Stanley (Orange County, Calif.) reached safely on a ground ball in the hole to give Suffolk runners at the corners and one out.

Freshman J.C. Collette (Amesbury, Mass.) evened the game with a single down the left field line, one of his three hits on the day as he was 3-for-4 at the plate.

Sullivan then put the Rams up 3-2 as he plated Stanley with the go-ahead run.

Sophomore Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) would cap the scoring as he singled through the left side as the Rams sent 10 hitters to the plate in the seventh inning with six base hits.

The Hawks would threaten in the eighth inning as Oppenheimer led the inning off with a single, that was followed by a base on balls to Travers. Libby would reitre the next hitter on a strike out, before Masulli was summoned from the bullpen. The freshman southpaw escaped the jam with one pitch inducing a 6-4-3 double play.

Jones added some insurance with his second RBI of the day in the ninth inning with a groundout.

Suffolk will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they host Lasell College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) double header at Adams Field in Quincy beginning at noon.
