Mendez Lifts Baseball to 7-1 Victory

Junior Jhonneris Mendez (Boston, Mass.) pitched eight innings as the Suffolk University Baseball team (3-3-1 overall) snapped a three-game skid with a 7-1 victory over the Fitchburg State University Falcons on Thursday afternoon.

Mendez was dominant on the mound going eight innings while striking out 10 hitters for his second victory of the season. Mendez allowed one run on four hits and also helped himself with the bat as he drove in a pair of runs and scored twice.

Suffolk scored two times in their first at-bat of the game with two outs as Mendez hit a double deep into the left center gap to score sophomore Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) for the game's first run. Junior Mitch Monke (Springfield, Ohio) later singled through the right side of the infield as the Rams built a 2-0 lead after one inning of play.

The Rams would strike again later on in the game, once again scoring with two outs as they plated three runs in the fifth inning to stake themselves to a 5-0 lead. Sophomore Mike Muse (Milton, Mass.) plated sophomore Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) with an RBI single. Cintolo kept the inning alive reaching on a hit by pitch. Monke came through again, this time driving in a pair of runs as his single with the bases loaded brought two more Suffolk runners across the plate.

Junior Joe Harvey (Reading, Mass.) scored the sixth of the run game for the Rams. Harvey came up as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning and hit the first pitch he saw back up the middle for a base hit. After an infield error and another walk, Mendez came to bat. Suffolk would draw their third walk of the inning bringing Harvey around the bases with some insurance as Mendez picked up his second RBI of the game.

Jones tacked on Suffolk's seventh run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning as he connected on his second home run of the trip hitting a towering drive to left.

Freshman Mike Masulli (Prospect, Conn.) pitched a perfect ninth for Suffolk.

Muse finished the game with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, while Monke had a pair of hits and a walk in four plate appeances. Suffolk collected 11 hits in the game with seven of the starting nine collecting at least one in the game.

Suffolk will be back in action on Friday afternoon as they take on Oswego State (NY) at 12:00pm at Lake Bonny Park in Lakeland.
