Baseball Falls Late, 6-5 To Becker
Becker College came from behind to defeated Suffolk University 6-5 in non-conference men's baseball action Wednesday afternoon.
 
Suffolk got the scoring started in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Mitch Monke was hit by a pitch and James Mconville singled up the middle with two outs, Jack Sullivan roped a double into right center, scoring Monke and Mconville.
 
The Hawks responded with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Mike Marcello (West Haven, Conn.) led off the inning with a single up the middle. Todd Tompkins (West Haven, Conn.) followed with a triple into right center, scoring Marcello from first. Becker tied the game at 2-2 when Austin Phillips (Thomson, Ga.) grounded out to second base, scoring Tompkins from third.
 
The Rams went back in front in the bottom of the fifth. Suffolk sophomore Jake Cintolo started off the inning by reaching second base on misplayed fly ball by a Becker outfielder. After two quick outs, one of them moving Cintolo to third base, Mike Muse drove the first pitch he saw to right field for an RBI double. Monke followed with a double into right center, scoring Muse, putting the Rams in front 4-2.
 
Suffolk added to their lead in the eighth when Muse smashed a 1-0 pitch over the right field fence, making the score 5-2.
 
With the Hawks backs to the wall in the top of the ninth, Becker rallied in dramatic fashion to take a 6-5 lead. After Marcello reached on a fielder's choice, Tompkins reached on an error by the Suffolk short stop and Phillips singled through the left side of the infield, loading the bases with one out. Weston Meehan (Thomson, Ga.) made the score 5-3 when he singled through the left side of the infield, scoring Marcello from third. The Hawks tied the game at 5-5 whenTom Natoli (Suffern, N.Y.) smacked a 0-1 pitch into the right field corner, scoring Tompkins from third and pinch runner Mike Smith (Warner, N.H.) from second. After Tony D'Addio (West Haven, Conn.) was intentionally walked, D.J. Reed (Londonderry, N.H.) hit a ground ball to the Suffolk first baseman's backhand; which was bobbled, allowing pinch runner Rasheen Green (West Haven, Conn.) to scamper home from third with the eventual game winning run.
 
The Rams made the Hawks earn the come from behind win, putting two runners on in the bottom of the ninth, but Tony Cantalupo (De Pere, Wisc.) got Muse to foul out to D'Addio behind the third base bag, securing the 6-5 final.
 
Becker freshman Keon Jenkins (Nashua, N.H.) earned his first collegiate win after pitching two and two thirds innings, allowing one run on two hits. Freshman Brian Dowling (Naugatuck, Conn.) pitched the first six innings, allowing just two earned runs on four hits. The Hawks (2-4) will being New England Collegiate Conference play tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1:30pm.
