Rain Forces Baseball to 4-4 Tie

Rain halted Saturday's game between the Suffolk University Baseball team and the Spalding University Golden Eagles after seven innings ending in a 4-4 tie.

Senior Tim Belanger (Raynham, Mass.) allowed four runs over seven innings while fanning five hitters and sophomore Mike Muse (Milton, Mass.) collected three hits on the day as the Rams remain undefeated to start the 2012 season.

A 20-minute rain delay in the bottom of the sixth inning postponed things as Suffolk trailed 4-3 with the tying run on third base. After play resumed sophomore Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) drove in sophomore Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) with a single down the left field line to even the game at four runs each. Cintolo started the inning drawing a hit by pitch and advanced to third on consecutive passed balls before the skies opened up.

The skies opened up for good during the top of the eighth inning before the grounds crew made the final decision on the game saying the field was unplayable.

The Rams opened the game's scoring in the home half of the first inning as Muse singled in Cintolo with a base hit up the middle.

Cintolo scored a pair of runs in the contest for Suffolk who now move to 1-0-1 after two games.

The Golden Eagles scored all four of their runs in the game in the top of the third inning taking advantage of a couple of misplayed fly balls in the outfield. Sophomore Kyle Barbee (Hopkinsville, Ky.) got the inning started with a bloop double down the left field line. Senior Eric Johnson (Lousiville, Ky.) then doubled to right field and later came around to score as senior Kyle Just (Louisville, Ky.) singled to center. Freshman Jeremy Barr (Greenup, Ky.) capped the inning with a two-run double to right center as Spalding built a 4-1 lead after two and a half innings of play.

Suffolk answered the following half as junior Chris Stanley (Orange County, Calif.) knocked in a run with an RBI single to cut the deficit in half.

Junior Jhonneris Mendez (Boston, Mass.) hit his first home run of the season in the in the fifth inning with a towering drive to left field.

Suffolk finished the day with 10 hits, the second day in a row they reached double digits in total hits as a team. Sophomore Mac Jacobson (Norfolk, Mass.) collected two hits on the day, including a double and made a spectacular rally killing diving catch to end the fifth inning.

Suffolk will be back in action on Sunday as they take on FDU-Florham in a double header beginning at 1:00pm that will be played at Lake Sumter Community College.
