Baseball Falls In ECAC Semifinals

The 2011 season came to a close for the Suffolk University Baseball team (24-21 overall) as top-seeded Endicott College (32-15 overall) rolled to a 10-5 victory in the semifinals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Tournament.

The Gulls put together a 16-hit attack on the day led by junior Danny Mello (Peabody, Mass.) who was 3-for-4 was three runs scored. All nine hitters in the Gulls lineup recorded at least one hit on the day, while seven Endicott hitters drove in runs as the Gulls advance to the ECAC Tournament finals.

Freshman Michael Muse (Milton, Mass.) went 3-for-4 on the day, while senior Mark Addesa (Revere, Mass.) added two hits to help pace a 10-hit attack for the Rams.

Suffolk jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in their first at-bat of the game as Addesa led the game off with a double to left center. Freshman Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) drove home the game's first run with a sacrifice fly to left.

Endicott would score five times in the bottom half of the third inning to set the tone for the rest of the game as they would not relinquish their lead.  Junior Robbie Goldstick (Deerfield, Ill.) got the inning going with a two-strike single to right. After a misplayed bunt off the bat of junior Mike Russo (Natick, Mass.), Mello would deliver another two strike hit for the Gulls through the left side of the infield to even the game at one. Senior Chris Dominguez (Braintree, Mass.) would then give the Gulls the lead with a single of his own through the right side of the infield. After a double play gave the Rams two outs and a chance to escape further damage, Endicott would collect three consecutive hits as freshman Jake Northrup (Boxborough, Mass.) and freshman Tad Gold (Martha's Vineyard, Mass.) did more damage with two strikes delivering RBI singles to keep the inning alive.

Mello would create more havoc for the Rams in the fourth inning as he led the inning off with a double, before stealing third base with one out. With the infield drawn in sophomore Eric Lemke (Southington, Conn.) would ground back to mound, but Mello would break home after being unchecked as the Rams were unable to secure the out in the rundown as Endicott stretched their lead to 6-1.

The Rams offense would not go quietly however as they managed to add a run in the fifth with two outs as junior Dan Belanger (Raynham, Mass.) singled up the middle and then came home to score on a double to left by senior Nick Travelyn (Bedford, N.H.).

Suffolk grabbed three more in the sixth inning with the big blow coming off the bat of senior Andrew Babb (Ashland, Mass.), who crushed his fifth home run of the season. After a one out walk to Jones, Babb hit a towering shot over left field fence to cut the Gulls lead in half. The Rams would continue to come back as senior Mark Annese (Winchester, Mass.) then doubled into center. A single by Muse would then chase Endicott starter Mike Nich (Orange, Conn.) from the game. Sophomore Chris Stanley (Orange County, Calif.) then drove in Annese with a groundout to second.

Endicott would then answer right back as Mello once again got the inning started this time drawing a walk. After stealing second base the Rams would retire the next two hitters before intentionally walking cleanup hitter Jake Northup. Junior Colin Sitarz (West Hartford, Conn.) would then deliver a two strike single back up the middle to send Mello home as the Gulls brought their lead back up to three runs, 7-5.

The Gulls would tack on three more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, all once again coming with two outs as Gold and Griffin delivered hits and a botched double steal resulted in a throwing error that plated the 10th run of the game for Endicott.

Senior Alex Torres (Framingham, Mass.) fell to 6-6 on the mound for Suffolk as he gave up all 10 runs (9 earned), walking four and surrendering the 16 hits. Torres struck out three in the game.

Nich moves to 7-4 on the season for the Gulls. The Endicott bullpen of sophomore Kevin Dupras (Belchertown, Mass.) and junior Benjamin Petrides (Belchertown, Mass.) pitched the final 3 2/3 innings not allowing a run. Petrides picked up his third save of the season.

The loss concludes the Suffolk season as the Rams fall to 24-21 on the year.
