Baseball Splits With St. Joe's

The Suffolk University Baseball team (13-13 overall, 5-3 GNAC) split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) double header on Saturday afternoon with the St. Joseph's College Monks (19-10 overall, 8-2 GNAC).

The Rams won game one behind a two-hit shutout by senior Alex Torres (Framingham, Mass.).

Torres was dominant all the way threw as he only allowed two singles in the contest, as the Monks were shutout at home for the first time since the 2007 season. The big righthander had five strikeouts in the game as he moves his record on the mound to 4-3.

Senior Nick Travelyn (Bedford, N.H.) delivered the game's big blow as he connected on his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth inning to gave Suffolk a 3-0 edge.

The Rams scored a run in the first inning as senior Mark Addesa (Revere, Mass.) led the game off reaching on an infield error, before coming around to score later in the inning on a double play. Addesa drove home the fourth run of the game with an RBI single to left field in the seventh inning.

The Monks were able to manage a split with Suffolk with a walkoff win in game two. Freshman Alec Lorence (Nanuet, N.Y.) blooped a two-out single to right with the bases loaded to plate the winning run as the Rams had trouble closing out the game for the conference sweep.

Trailing 3-2 to start the inning, junior Dan Brown (Portland, Me.) drew a one out walk to start the trouble Senior Ian Lee (Hampden, Me.) then reached base when his sacrifice bunt attempt was thrown away. Junior Dan Achorn (Bow, N.H.) then got the game even at three runs as his single fell into centerfield.

Suffolk would again take the early lead in the game as sophomore Mike Cunningham (Syosset, N.Y.) drove in freshman Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) with a sacrifice fly.

Junior Stephen Schultz (Salem, N.H.) drove home the second Suffolk run of the game with a sacrifice fly to deep center to drive home senior Mark Annese (Winchester, Mass.), who got the inning started with a double.

Cintolo plated the Rams third run of the game with a two-out RBI single to left in the fifth.

Senior Andrew Babb (Ashland, Mass.) was 3-for-4 in the nightcap for the Rams as Suffolk collected eleven hits as a team in the game.
