Baseball Sweeps Double Header at RIC

The  Suffolk University Baseball team (7-4 Overall) swept the Rhode Island College Anchormen (5-6 Overall) in a non-conference double header on Saturday afternoon in Providence, R.I..

Freshman Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) finished the day with four RBI for the Rams collecting five hits in seven at-bats, while freshman Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) had a 4-for-6 day scoring a pair of runs with an RBI.

The Rams took game one 4-2 on a complete game effort by senior Alex Torres (Framingham, Mass.), who moves to 2-1 on the season for Suffolk. The senior righthander allowed two runs in the first, then cruised through the next six innings retiring the final 18 hitters he faced in a row for his second victory of the season and first complete game.

The Anchormen jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning on a double down the left field line by senior Gary Levesque (East Providence, R.I.).

Rhode Island College would threaten again in the second as junior Joan Mustafa (Providence, R.I.) reached on an infield single and senior Justin Corso (Cranston, R.I.) doubled bringing runners on second and third with no outs. Torres, however would buckle down striking out the next two hitters and then escaping the jam with an infield flyout.

The Rams would answer in the fourth scoring once as Jones singled and then stole second before coming home on an RBI single to right off of the bat of Cintolo.

Senior Mark Addesa (Revere, Mass.) would even the game at two with a single up the middle. Cintolo would put the Rams up by two later in the inning driving home Jones and sophomore Remy Carpinito (Reading, Mass.).

Torres finished the game striking out 10 Anchormen hitters, allowing just the two earned runs on five hits.

The Rams finished game one with 10 hits as a team as Jones finished 3-for-4, while Cintolo had a pair of hits along with senior Andrew Babb (Ashland, Mass.).

Suffolk got out of the gates quick in game two scoring a run in the first inning as sophomore Mike Cunningham (Syosset, N.Y.) grounded into a fielder's choice that resulted in an Anchormen error plating Addesa for the game's first run.

The Rams would add three runs in the top half of the second inning. Addesa would drove in the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly that would score junior Stephen Schultz (Salem, N.H.). The Anchormen would have another defensive miscue that would plate senior Mark Annese (Winchester, Mass.) and Devan Jones would cap the inning off with an RBI single to send senior Nick Travelyn (Bedford, N.H.) home for Suffolk's fourth run.

Rhode Island College would answer in the bottom half of the second inning as junior Brent Hopkins (Cranston, R.I.) connected on a home run off the right field scoreboard for the Anchormen's first run of the game.

Mark Annese would help get the Rams some insurance in the fourth inning as the senior catcher led the inning off with a triple to right center. Addesa would continue to drive home runners, singling up the middle to make the score 5-1 Rams.

The Anchormen would make things interesting however in the bottom half of the fifth inning. RBI singles by Hopkins and Levesque would cut the Rams' lead to 5-3 as Rhode Island College managed to load the bases with just one out in the inning chasing Suffolk starter Tim Belanger (Raynham, Mass.).

Senior Charles Kilgore (Milford, N.H.) would bail the Rams out of trouble getting two weak fly balls to escape the damage and preserve the Rams lead. Kilgore would pitch the final 2 2/3 innings for his first save of the season. Belanger (1-0) earned the win going 4 1/3 innings allowing three runs on six hits to pick up his decision of the season.

Annese finished game two for Suffolk going 2-for-3, scoring twice, while Cintolo also had a pair of hits. Addesa finished the game with a hit in his only charged plate appearance, while drawing two walks and driving in a pair of runs.

Suffolk will continue their three day stint against opponents from the Little East Conference as they play their season home opener on Sunday afternoon against reigning New England Champion UMass-Boston at 1:00pm at Adams Field in Quincy.
