Jones' Blast Leads Rams to 11-7 Win Over Curry

The Suffolk University Rams (5-2overall) topped the Curry College Colonels (4-5 overall), 11-7 on Thursday afternoon at the RussMatt College Invitational in Winter Haven, Fla.

With the Rams trailing 4-3 in the top of the sixth inning, freshman Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) hit a laser over the left field fence for a grand slam to cap a five-run inning as Suffolk wins their third straight game.

Senior Mark Addesa (Revere, Mass.) was 4-for-6 on the day, with two RBI as the Rams pounded out 19 hits as a team. Jones and senior Mark Annese (Winchester, Mass.) had three hits each, while sophomores Chris Stanley (Orange County, Calif.), Remy Carpinito (Reading, Mass.) and freshman Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) all chipped in with a pair of hits.

Senior Alex Torres (Framingham, Mass.) picked up his first win of the season on the mound going six innings allowing four earned runs on six hits, while striking out six.

Sophomore Matt Sliney (Brockton, Mass.) earned his first career collegiate save pitching the final three frames fanning five Colonels hitters.

Sophomore Sam Barron (Florence, Mass.) led the Colonels with a 3-for-5 day with 3 RBI, while sophomore Matt Rodriguez (Quincy, Mass.) was also 3-for-5 with a run batted in.

Curry jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first. Senior Sean Jackman (Stoughton, Mass.) led the game off with a single that was followed by a walk to senior Brad Hawn (Chino Hills, Calif.). Rodriguez would single to load the bases before Barron drove in the first two runs of the game with a single.

The Rams would answer in the third as Annese laced a double down the third base line and then came around to score on a fielder's choice.

Curry jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning as Hawn started the inning off with a walk and came around to score on a Matt Rodriguez double. Rodriguez came around to score later in the inning on a passed ball.

Suffolk took the lead for good however in the sixth highlighted by the Jones blast as they batted around in the inning. Carpinito would get the inning going coming off the bench as a pinch-hitter as he doubled to center. Addesa would drive in Carpinito for the Rams' first run of the inning with a single. Stanley would add a single to left field to load the bases and set the table for Jones who delivered the big blow, his second home run in as many days.

Addesa would drive in another Suffolk run in the seventh inning with a double, and the Rams would add some insurance in the eighth with two more runs highlighted by an RBI single by Annese, who finished the day knocking in three runs.

Suffolk will conclude their spring trip onFriday afternoon as they take on Keene State College at 3:30pm at Chain O'Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla.
