Baseball Walks Off With 10-9 Win Over Daniel Webster

Sophomore Mike Cunningham (Syosset, N.Y.) blooped in a two-out single to a cap a three-run rally as the Suffolk University Rams (4-2 overall) walked off with a 10-9 victory over the Daniel Webster College Eagles (4-2 overall) on Wednesday afternoon.

Trailing 9-7 to start off the bottom of the ninth, the Eagles recorded two quick outs before senior Andrew Babb (Ashland, Mass.) kept the inning alive with a walk. Freshman Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) would follow up with a double to right center to put the tying run in scoring position for the Rams and bring the go ahead run to the plate. Rams skipper Cary McConnell would go to his bench and call upon junior Mitch Monke (Springfield, Ohio) to pinch-hit. Down in a 1-2 count, Monke hit a long-fly ball to centerfield that was lost in the sun bringing around sophomore pinch-runner Joe Harvey (Reading, Mass.) to even the game at 9-9. Cunningham then dropped the second pitch he saw in the following at bat down the left field line as sophomore pinch-runner Andrew McCarty (Franklin, Mass.) sprinted home for the winning run as the Rams pick up their fourth win on their spring trip.

Freshman Korey LeLievre (Hudson, N.H.) had a huge day for the Eagles, going 3-for-5 at the plate with five RBI. LeLievre put the Eagles ahead in the sixth inning crushing a grand slam to left field as the Eagles went ahead 6-3 after five and a half innings of play.

The Rams would answer in the bottom of the sixth inning with two runs as Cintolo plated a run with a double, and freshman Remy Carpinito (Reading, Mass.) drove in their second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 6-5.

LeLievre gave the Eagles some insurance in the seventh driving in another run with a single plating sophomore Josh Chasse (Haverhill, Mass.) who led the inning off with a single.

Suffolk would score again with two outs in the eighth inning to even the game. After Cintolo led the inning off being hit by a pitch, Carpinito would draw a walk giving the Rams runners on first and second with nobody out. After a strikeout, junior Stephen Schultz (Salem, N.H.) would hit a deep fly ball to right that would advance Cintolo to third, giving the Rams runners on the corners. Freshman Danny Gunn (Medford, Mass.) would come in to pinch-run and steal second base, with Cintolo running home on the play. Senior Nick Travelyn (Bedford, N.H.) would then even the game with a double to right center bringing Gunn home to even the game at seven runs a piece.

Daniel Webster would come right back in the ninth inning adding two more runs. Chasse would start the inning off with a single, before sophomore Elliot Kilgore (Milford, N.H.) doubled giving the Eagles two runners in scoring position with no outs. Senior Bruce Brown (Lowell, Mass.) then drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to right, and Kilgore would score later in the inning on a wild pitch.

Freshman Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) connected on his first collegiate home run in the third inning as the Suffolk second baseman 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Babb and Cintolo also had two hits for Suffolk on the day as the Rams pounded out 11 hits as a team.

LeLievre, Chasse and senior Chris McKenzie (Burlington, Mass.) all had three hits on the day as the Eagles collected a dozen hits.

Junior Brian Svensson (Wilmington, Mass.) earned his first win of the season in relief, pitching the ninth inning for Suffolk.

Suffolk will be back in action on Thursday morning as they take on Curry College at Chain O' Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla. at 9:00am.
