Babb Lifts Suffolk to 7-4 Victory over Ripon

Senior Andrew Babb (Ashland, Mass.) pitched seven strong innings to lead the Suffolk University Rams (3-2 overall) to a 7-4 victory over the Ripon College Red Hawks (0-5 overall) on Tuesday afternoon.

Sophomore Remy Carpinito (Reading, Mass.) broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning with a pinch-hit RBI single with the bases loaded as the Rams pick up their third win of the young season.

Trailing 2-1 to start the sixth, freshman Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) drew a walk to leadoff the inning. He would come around to score two hitters later as sophomore Mike Cunningham (Syosset, N.Y.) laced a single down the right field line to even the game. Later in the inning, senior Mark Annese (Winchester, Mass.) would draw a bases load walk and senior Mark Addesa (Revere, Mass.) would cap the inning off with a sacrifice fly as Suffolk sent nine men to the plate.

Senior Nick Travelyn (Bedford, N.H.) finished the day just a double shy of the cycle, as he went 3-for-4 with a stolen base. Travelyn got the Rams on the board in the third inning crushing his first home run of the season.

The Red Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second as junior Eric Schumacher (Franklin, Wis.) doubled home sophomore Adam Grambow (Menasha, Wis.). Sophomore Taylor Koth (Cedarburg, Wis.) plated Ripon's second run of the inning with a one-out RBI single.

Carpinito gave the Rams some insurance in the seventh picking up his second RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly, while Addesa added his second RBI of the day in the eighth with a single past the first base bag.

Ripon managed to make things interesting in the eighth inning as they loaded the bases with nobody out. Senior Nick Beaman (Oshkosh, Wis.) knocked home the Red Hawks first run of the inning with a line drive into right. The Rams managed to escape any major damage as junior reliever Brian Svensson (Wilmington, Mass.) induced a 5-4 double play that scored another Ripon run. Svensson got the Rams out of further trouble with a strikeout to end the Ripon threat.

Babb earns his first win of the season on the mound going seven-plus innings allowing four runs on six hits, while striking out five Red Hawks' hitters. Babb retired 12 straight hitters at one point of the game.

Senior Alex Torres (Framingham, Mass.) pitched the ninth to earn his first save of the season.

Cunningham and freshman Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) each had two hits on the day, as the Rams collected eleven hits on the day.

Suffolk will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon as they take on Daniel Webster College at 12:30pm
