Baseball Falls Short to UMass Dartmouth, 6-5

The Suffolk University Baseball team (2-2) dropped a 6-5 decision to the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs (3-1) on Monday afternoon.

Sophomore Mike Cunningham (Syosset, N.Y.) blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to even the game at 5-5, but the Corsairs would score the game-winning run in the top of the eighth on a two out infield single for their third win of their spring break trip.

Junior John Granaham (Hanover, Mass.) hit a chopper over the mound on an 0-2 fastball to score junior Anthony Fiorita (North Reading, Mass.) for the go ahead run, after Fiorita led the inning off with a single.

Cunningham finished the game 2-for-4 for the Rams, while sophomore Chris Stanley (Orange County, Calif.) was 3-for-4.

The Corsairs got on the board first scoring twice in the second inning with two outs on a bases loaded walk, and an infield error to take the early led.

Suffolk would answer in the third as senior Mark Addesa (Revere, Mass.) led the inning off with a double to right center and came around to score on a single up the middle off of the bat of Stanley.

Graham would plate the Corsairs' third run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, and the Corsairs would add another run in the fifth with another sacrifice fly by junior Dan DeMello (Taunton, Mass.).

Suffolk added a pair of runs in the fifth inning as freshman Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) drove in a run with a triple to deep center and came around to score on a single up by the middle by senior Andrew Babb (Ashland, Mass.).

Senior Kyle Merrill (Dennis, Mass.) earned the win in relief for the Corsairs, while junior Pat Lavey (Cranston, R.I.) earned the save pitching two innings of scoreless relief.

Senior Charles Kilgore (Milford, N.H.) suffered the loss in relief for Suffolk pitching 4 1/3 innings, scattering five hits while fanning three.

Suffolk will be back in action on Tuesday as they take on Ripon College (WI) at noon at Chain O' Lakes Park in Auburndale, Fla.
