Baseball Falls Short in Season Opener

The Suffolk University Baseball team fell in their season opener, 5-4 to the Webster College Gorloks (5-1 overall).

Senior Alex Torres (Framingham, Mass.) went eight strong innings allowing four runs and striking out four, while scattering four hits.

Trailing 4-0, Suffolk scored all four runs in the fourth inning as senior Mark Addesa (Revere, Mass.) led the inning off with a walk. Sophomore Chris Stanley (Orange County, Calif.) and freshman Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) followed up with back to back singles to load the bases and nobody out. Senior Andrew Babb (Ashland, Mass.) drove in the Rams' first run with a fielder's choice to short, and an errant throw in the infield would plate the Rams second run of the inning on the same play. Freshman Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) continued the inning with an RBI single to right and junior Steve Schultz (Salem, N.H.) would cap the Suffolk rally with another single to even the score.

Webster scored the eventual game winning run with two outs in the top of the eighth as junior Tom Henke (St. Louis, Mo.) placed a single down the right field right to score senior Anthony Genna (Willow Springs, Ill.), who doubled with two outs.

The Gorloks jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first as sophomore Cody Stevenson (Salem, Ill.) started the game with a walk and came around to score on a ground out by Genna. Webster would add two more in the frame as senior Craig Schaefer (Carterville, Ill.) connected on a two-run homer to left.

Sophomore Steven Dooley (Oran, Mo.) earned the win in relief pitching the final two innings, not allowing a run, while freshman starter Zach Schneider (Grayslake, Ill.) had seven strikeouts over seven innings of work.

Suffolk had a chance to tie the game in the ninth as they had runners on first and second with one out but were unable to get the game tying hit.

Suffolk will be back in action on Saturday as they play FDU-Florham at 12:30 at Lake Myrtle Park as part of the RussMatt Invitational.
