Baseball Picks Up First Win of 2011

The Suffolk University Baseball team (1-1 overall) picked up their first win of the 2011 season as they held on for a 9-8 victory over the Fairleigh Dickinson University Devils.

Junior Mitch Monke (Springfield, Ohio) struck nine hitters over eight innings of work on the mound, while the Suffolk offense collected 13 hits on the day.

Sophomore Chris Stanley (Orange County, Calif.) led the offense with a 3-for-5 day scoring twice, while junior Stephen Schultz (Salem, N.H) drove in three runs on the day.

Suffolk scored twice in the first to pace the offense as senior Andrew Babb (Ashland, Mass.) singled up the middle to plate the Rams first run. Schultz would add a sacrifice fly later in the inning to give the Rams a 2-1 lead after one inning of play.

The Rams would plate three more runs in the fifth inning and add three more in the sixth inning to take a 9-3 lead after six.

Freshman Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.)  was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while freshman Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) had two hits on the day, including an RBI single. Junior Dan Belanger
(Raynham, Mass.) and freshman Michael Muse (Milton, Mass.) also knocked in runs for Suffolk with singles.

Suffolk will be back in action on Sunday as they take on Stevens Institute at 3:30 at Chain O'Lakes Park in Auburndale, Fla.
