Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Westfield State

Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

The Suffolk University Baseball team dropped a double header to Westfield State College on Thursday afternoon. The Rams lost the first game of the double header, 5-0 before dropping the second game 5-2 as the Owls took advantage of Rams’s miscues all day for the sweep.

In game one, freshman Bret Siflinger (Framingham, Mass.) stifled the Rams hitters throwing a complete game shutout only allowing four hits, while striking out four. Siflinger induced 15 groundouts in seven innings of work, while not allowing a Suffolk baserunner to reach third base in the game.

The Owls got on the board two times in the fourth inning as they took advantage of erractic starting pitching from Suffolk as junior Andrew Babb (Framingham, Mass.) walked in a pair of runs with the bases loaded.

Westfield State would once again take advantage of Suffolk miscues in the top of the seventh as the Rams committed two infield errors which would lead to three more Owls’ runs. Seniors Jeff Fields (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Kevin Lyons (Braintree, Mass.) would each hit RBI doubles in the inning to help put the game away.

Game two got off to a rough start for the Rams as well as Suffolk committed two more errors leading to a quick 3-0 lead for the Owls.

Junior Mark Addesa (Revere, Mass.) knocked in both Suffolk runs in game two. The first coming with an RBI-double deep into left field plating Babb to cut the lead to 3-1.

The Rams would threaten in the top of the sixth as senior Bobby Barrett (Milton, Mass.) led the inning off with a single, followed by senior Marc Doyle (Whitman, Mass.) drawing a walk. Freshman John Vigliotti (Amesbury, Mass.) would single to load the bases with nobody out and the Rams trailing, 4-1. Addesa knocked in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field, but the Owls would get out of the inning on a groundout to second base to end the threat.

Sophomore Mitch Monke (Springfield, Ohio) started on the mound for Suffolk, giving the Rams a much needed quality start. Monke settled in after a rough first inning going 5 2/3 innings only allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out four.

Suffolk will be back in action on Friday morning as they take on Ramapo College (NJ) at 9:30 am.
