Four Rams Earn Weekly GNAC Honors

Four Suffolk University student-athletes earned recognition by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) for the week of April, 5.

Baseball senior Bobby Barrett (Milton, Mass.) was named GNAC Player of the Week. Barrett went 6-for-8 combined in Saturday’s double header at Norwich University. Barrett finished both games hitting for the cycle, as he hit a home run in his first at-bat of the day and then went a perfect 4-for-4 in game two, with two RBI and three runs scored.

Baseball freshman Jhonneris Mendez (Roslindale, Mass.) as named GNAC Rookie of the Week. Mendez went a combined 5-for-8 in Saturday’s double header with 7 RBI total. Mendez broke open game one with his first collegiate home run in the 7th inning, a 3-run shot to left as the Rams won game one, 8-1. Mendez added three more RBI in his first at-bat of game two, hitting a bases clearing triple to right to lead the Rams to a 14-0 victory in the nightcap. Mendez added an RBI-triple later in the third.

Men’s Tennis sophomore Chris Staley (London, England) was named GNAC Player of the Week after posting a perfect 4-0 record in both singles and doubles play combined. Staley, the defending GNAC Rookie of the Year, earned both his singles victories on the week in the two position in singles play for the Rams. Staley picked up 6-1, 6-2 victories in singles play on Thursday over Wentworth and was a 6-0, 6-1 winner on Saturday in his match versus Albertus Magnus College. Staley, along with junior John Samander (Curacao, Netherlands) were victors twice this week in doubles play as well, in the second doubles position for the Rams.

Men’s Tennis freshman Harlan Strader (Marblehead, Mass.) was named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll. Strader finished the week a combined 3-1 in both singles and doubles play. Strader won both his sets in singles play this week, playing in the four position for the Rams. Strader was a 6-3, 6-3 winner on Thursday in Suffolk’s match against Wentworth and was a 6-2, 6-2 victor on Saturday against Albertus Magnus. Stader and his partner, junior Diego Alvarado (Boston, Mass.) were a combined 1-1 on the week in the top doubles position.
