Box Score

Springfield, MA - The Suffolk University Baseball team (22-5) bounced back taking care of an old foe on Wednesday defeating Western New England College(19-11), by a score of 6-3. Junior Marc Doyle (Whitman, MA) was strong on the mound for Suffolk going 6 1/3 innings picking up his second win of the year. Sophomore Jon Handy (South Burlington, VT) picked up two hits and two RBI and the Rams played flawless defense to win their ninth game in their last ten contests.

The Rams struck early in the first. With two outs junior Bobby Barrett (Milton, MA) drew a walk and was followed by a single to left by senior Keith Carter (Newburyport, MA). Handy then roped a double into left center scoring both runners as the Rams jumped out 2-0.

The Rams would add three more runs in the third inning as Carter singled home a run, and senior Mike Kenneally (Georgetown, MA) drove in a pair with a double.

The Golden Bears would chip away at the lead adding a one run in the fifth and sixth innings.

WNEC had a golden opportunity in the seventh as they loaded the bases with one out. Sophomore Jason Leclerc (Chicopee, MA) started the trouble by doubling with one out before Doyle would walk the next two batters to load them up. The Rams then went to bullpen as senior Tim Doyle (Milton, MA) was called in. On the first pitch Doyle ran a sinker in off the elbow of junior Steve Kearney (Glastonbury, CT) to force home a run.

The Rams escaped the jam as the senior right-hander got WNEC's Chris Newell to roll over a fastball to third base. Kenneally fed the ball to Barrett for the force out at home to start the 5-2-3 double play to escape the jam.

Senior Dan Delia (Boston, MA) pitched the final two innings for his second save of the season.

Carter finished the game 3-5, while Handy and Kenneally both picked up two hits.

Suffolk now heads into the final week of GNAC regular season play as they host Lasell College in their inaugural season in the league. Game time is set for 3:30 at Adams Field in Quincy.
