Trio of Student-Athletes Named to GNAC Honor Rolls

A trio of Suffolk University student-athletes earned recognition in the opening week of action by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) by being selected to their sports’ respective Weekly Honor Roll.

Freshman Erika Nelson (Peabody, Mass.) of Women’s Soccer was named to the Weekly Honor Roll following her impressive college debut. The freshman forward netted a pair of goals in Suffolk’s 4-1 season opening victory over Newbury College. Nelson’s first goal of the night, and first career tally proved to be the game winner as she put in a goal at the 43 minute marker of the first half on Monday. She would later strike in the game’s sixty third minute from twenty yards out while being set up by fellow classmate Jennifer Martin (Higganum, Conn.).

Both Men’s and Women’s Cross Country had a strong showing in their first meet of the fall at the Lt. Travis J. Fuller Invitational hosted by Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

The women placed third overall in the 5K event with a team score of 75. Senior Kelly Warwick (Newburyport, Mass.) was Suffolk’s top runner on the women’s side finishing sixth overall with a total time of 22:56 while running at a 7:23 mile pace.

The men finished with a fourth place finished as senior Mohamed Hayibor (Dakar, Senegal) placed as their top runner. Hayibor finished ninth overall in the race running at a 6:09 pace as he completed the 8K meet at a time of 30:44. Suffolk recorded a total of 115 points in the event.

It will be a busy week for the Athletic teams in the week ahead.

Volleyball will look to make it two wins in a row on Tuesday evening as they host Mass. Maritime in their home opener in the Regan Gymnasium at 7:00pm. They’ll travel across the Charles River on Friday and Saturday to take part of the MIT Invitational this weekend.

Men’s Soccer continue to look for their first win of the season as they welcome Tufts University to Dilboy Stadium in Somerville on Wednesday evening at 8:00pm.

Both soccer teams will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as part of a GNAC doubleheader. The women will host Emmanuel College at 1:00pm before the men take on Rivier University at 4:00pm. Both matches will be played at Dilboy Stadium.
