Suffolk University Men's Basketball senior forward Brian Small (Stoughton, MA) was named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America ® Men's Basketball College Division Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Small, who majors in Finance at Suffolk University's Sawyer School of Management maintains a cumulative grade point average of 3.96. In six of his seven semesters thus far at Suffolk, Small has achieved a perfect 4.0 gpa.
Small recently wrapped up his college career, finishing ninth all time in program history at Suffolk with 1,383 career points. In his senior campaign, Small led the Rams with a 17.3 points per game average and 9.0 rebounds per game, assists at 2.8 and field goal percentage .486.
Earlier this month, Small was named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Small has now made the Academic All-District team for District 1 for the third consecutive season.
Small was one of only two players from New England area schools to earn national recognition on the Academic All-America teams among the college division (Divisions II & III).
Small was named "GNAC Player of the Week "on February 1st of this past season, and has been named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll on four other occasions. He currently stands in the top ten in several categories within the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC); 5th in scoring, 3rd in rebounding, 9th in assists and 6th with 1.3 blocked shots per game.
Small has also been a part of Suffolk's "Skills and Drills" program for the past four seasons in conjuction with the Boston Public Schools system while under Head Coach Adam Nelson.
The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSida) selects Academic All America teams in 12 programs: football, women's volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's track & field/cross country, women's track & field/cross country, men's at large and women's at large. A first team, second team and third team are selected in both the University (Division I and I-AA) and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divisions.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
