Rich Tierney joined the Suffolk Athletics Department as the first Assistant Sports Information Director in September of 2025.
Tierney will join longtime Sports Information Director/Senior Women’s Administrator Amy Barry to help enhance the coverage of the University’s 20 varsity teams and their student-athletes.
Tierney brings with him a wealth of experience in athletic communications, digital media, and game operations across all levels of college athletics. This past year he served as a Graduate Assistant for Athletic Communications at Rivier University where he was responsible for promoting the Raiders’ 15 varsity programs, managing the transition of the department’s website from Presto to Sidearm, and producing daily content across social media channels. He was involved with the creation of press releases, game recaps, and statistical coverage, while also serving as a photographer for several events.
During his time at Rivier, Tierney provided full coverage for the men’s lacrosse program throughout its historic 2025 season, where the Raiders captured their first-ever Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship, earned their first NCAA Tournament berth, and went on to win the program’s first NCAA Tournament game.
Tierney has contributed live statistical coverage for several Division I programs across the New England area. He has worked at events such as the 2024 Ivy League Women’s Volleyball Tournament, the 2024 Patriot League Women’s Basketball Tournament for CBS Sports, and most recently, the 2025 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships as part of ESPN’s statistics team.
The Malden, Massachusetts product got his background in the athletic communications field at Nichols College for two years from 2023-24. With the Bison, he created graphics, wrote recaps, updated the athletics website and supported with event operations to assist the communications team.
Tierney’s professional work extends beyond collegiate athletics, as he served as a Sport Information Consultant for USL League Two’s Black Rock F.C. in the Summer of 2025 where he designed social media campaigns and produced live broadcasts featured on NBC Sports, while also assisting with game-day operations.
Alongside his communications career, Tierney has built a strong coaching network. Since 2020, he has coached with the MVPride East Coast, an AAU basketball program based in Boston. He has led teams across different age levels to over 20 championships, including the Varsity Zero Gravity National Championship in 2022. He currently serves as a part-time assistant coach for the Arlington Catholic girls’ varsity basketball program.
Tierney graduated from Nichols in 2024 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Sport Management and is currently pursuing his MBA in Business Management at Rivier.
