Dr. Gary Fireman was appointed as Suffolk University Athletics Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) in August 2014. In this role, Fireman will serve in an advisory capacity to the President on issues specific to the University’s athletic program and act as a liaison between the University and athletics.
Fireman is the Associte Provost of Academic Affairs and a Professor of Psychology. A well-educated individual in the psychology field, Fireman earned his Postdoctoral training in Developmental Psychology at the City University of New York’s Graduate Center, both his PhD and Masters in Clinical Psychology from Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus and began his collegiate educational career with a Bachelor’s in psychology from the University of Michigan.
Over Fireman’s career he has developed research interest in emotional complexity and social reasoning related to bullying and to sleep quality. His clinical work extends to the treatment of youth and young adults.
Prior to joining Suffolk’s faculty in 2004, Fireman taught at Texas Tech University for 14 years. While at Texas Tech he consulted with the athletics department on assessment of learning disabilities and was appointed Guest Coach for a football game in 1998.
An individual with a long-time standing interest in athletics, Fireman has supported the Rams since arriving on campus. In addition to cheering on the Rams in the stands, he has met with several student prospects during their on-campus visits.
Pairing his interests of psychology and athletics, Fireman was recently appointed to the Massachusetts Bar Association Traumatic Brain Injury Task Force with a particular interest in prevention of head trauma in youth and in intercollegiate sports.
Fireman’s article on Narrative Qualities of Bad Dreams and Nightmares is published in Dreaming and his article on Long-Term Psychosocial Consequences of Peer Victimization: From Elementary to High School is published in School Psychology Quarterly. He is also published in Computers in Human Behavior, Journal of School Psychology and Psychological Science.
Fireman and his wife have two daughters who were both active in athletics and club sports throughout their educational careers, with one continuing onto the collegiate level.
