Turn a few pages in the record books of the Suffolk University softball program, and it’s easy to see why Kathleen (Tolson) Currie is considered one of the finest all-around players to ever wear the blue and gold.

During her standout four-year career on the diamond, Currie, who batted lefty and threw righty, could always be counted on to deliver a timely hit or make a key defensive play.

Offensively, Currie ranks sixth all-time in batting average (.435), slugging percentage (.665), on-base percentage (.492), hits (170), and doubles (27) for the Rams. She also holds the fifth spot in most ever home runs (13), RBIs (92), and triples (12), and is fourth on the list in total bases (260).

Defensively, Currie was the talented starting shortstop for three years, and the glue that held the infield together. Then, as a senior, she made the transition to catcher, embracing her new position with a competitive spirit that truly defined her as a student-athlete.

Currie led by example and was one of the team captains in both her junior and senior years. Her overall skills helped Suffolk to three Great Northeast Athletic Conference tournament appearances and two winning seasons.

As a senior, Currie batted .431 with eight home runs and 34 runs batted in. She was also a solid defensive player behind the plate. Due to her outstanding two-way efforts, she was named the Rams’ Most Valuable Player, a deserving tribute to her excellence between the lines.

Currie looks back at her playing days with pride. “We had hard-working teams that were close and had a blue-collar attitude,” she recalled. “Everyone did their job and really cared about each other’s success, and that of the team.”

Upon graduating from Suffolk, Currie’s main claim to fame was being the first ball girl hired by the new Boston Red Sox owners in 2002. For her, roaming the baselines at Fenway Park was a dream come true.

Currie, whose background includes working as a business analyst, lives in Holbrook with her husband, Paul, and their four daughters: Hannah (7), Taylor (6), Julia (4), and Ella (1½). “We have our own little infield,” she chuckled.
