If Suffolk University was looking to create a model of the ideal student-athlete,

Dan Florian would certainly be near the top of the list.

Drive and intelligence have always been two of his strongest attributes.  Challenge his body or his mind – like taking a game-winning shot or solving a difficult business problem – and he will conquer each task in successful fashion.

As a 6-foot-4, 210-pound power forward, Florian made a name for himself on the basketball court as an all-around performer.  He is the University’s seventh all-time leading scorer with 1,465 points, a total he achieved with a variety of shots from all areas on the court.  His 605 made field goals ranks fifth in the Suffolk men’s basketball record books.

Florian averaged 16.4 points and 5.3 rebounds as a sophomore, 19.2 points and 7.1 rebounds as a junior, and 16.8 points and 6.2 rebounds as a senior.  He was Mr. Consistency at both ends of the floor and someone who could always be counted on to give one hundred percent.

Captain of the team in both his junior and senior seasons, Florian led the Rams to an overall record of 17-10, 12-4 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), during his final campaign.  He was also a GNAC first team all-conference selection his last two seasons, and named the team’s Most Valuable Player as a senior.

Florian’s accomplishments as a student-athlete extended well beyond the basketball court.  He was a standout in the classroom and earned NCAA Academic All-American honors in both his junior and senior years.  His ability to excel academically and athletically was admired by family and friends, students and teammates, faculty and coaches.

In addition, Florian was the recipient of the coveted Charles Law Outstanding Student Athlete Award in 2001, a tribute to his athletic and academic success.  As a senior, he was also named Male Athlete of the Year by the Student Government Association.

“My fondest memories at Suffolk are the camaraderie shared with my teammates,” said Florian.  “Playing basketball and spending time with guys you really like – it doesn’t get any better than that.”

Florian is a Principal with Sun Capital Partners, Inc., a global, private equity firm based in Boca Raton, Florida.  He and his wife, Angela, have two daughters – Gabriela, 8, and Jasmine, 5.
