Establishing success in the world of sports takes talent, heart and consistency, and Larry Chabre perfectly demonstrated all of those qualities during his days as a Suffolk University baseball player.

From 1983-1986, Chabre was a four-year starter for the Rams, and one of the most hard-nosed and productive individuals ever.  He was considered “Mr. Baseball” throughout the University campus, and he could always be counted on to deliver a big hit or make a key defensive play to win the game.

Batting third or cleanup, Chabre hit .320, .448 (fourth all-time), .433 (seventh all-time), and .379, respectively, between his freshman and senior seasons.  Those numbers add up to a career batting average of .395 (sixth all-time), including 164 hits and 122 runs batted in (seventh all-time).

Defensively, Chabre filled the role of catcher, a position he played beginning in Little League. Unlike many players crouched behind the plate today, searching for signals from a coach in the dugout, Chabre would be in command, telling his teammate on the mound what pitches to throw.

Taking a trip down memory lane, Chabre recalls the game when Suffolk, a Division III school, beat Division I Northeastern.  He also looks back proudly when, as a member of the ECAC All-New England team in 1985, he played at Fenway Park, going 1-2 (line-drive single to right field) with family and friends cheering him on.

This marks the second time that Chabre has been inducted into the Suffolk Athletic Hall of Fame.  In 2009, his 1984 team, which made school history by being the first squad to qualify for ECAC postseason play with a record of 15-9, was inducted into the University’s athletic shrine.

“We had no superstars on that team, but we blended together so well,” said Chabre.  “We beat the odds by working hard and leaving everything on the field.”

During his career, Chabre was named the team’s Rookie of the Year as a freshman, an ECAC All-New England selection as a sophomore, and recipient of the Most Valuable Player award at Suffolk in his junior and senior seasons.

Chabre works as a sales specialist for Lowe’s in Woburn.  He and his wife, Kim, have been married for 27 years and live in Malden.  They have two sons – Matt, 26, and Jeff, 24.
